Now I've been thinking of this for a while as a possible project. I'm mainly after idea's and a bit of info.

Dad's 1000CL's engine has seen better day's (poorly maintained by previous owners :() and I've been thinking of buying a written off mk3 Diesel (MJ) Panda .

Now how easy would it be to convirt the 1000CL to Diesel.

Obviously I'd need different fuel pumps and electronics etc, but I'm more on about how easy engine fitment would be.

I know the mk3 Petrol Panda's still use the FIRE engines fitted to mk2's, and would assume at a rough guess that the engine mount points would hopefully be the same

On this assumption, I would also assume that if designing an engine from new (the 1.3 multijet) that they'd do it so that the mounting points are the same as the petrol versions so that they don't have the redesign the engine bay in the mk3's that much

(still with me so far :p )

So is it likely that as far as mounting goes, the MJ would be a fairly straight swap from the 999cc FIRE?

Any Idea's would be great.

Jon.

Not sure about the mounging points being the same, after all, the 1.3 multijet is used in a variety of cars. And by vauxhall and suzuki too.

Probably need to fabricate your own mounts, but that shouldnt be too dificult

I would suggest that the MJ 1242 diesel will be much bigger that the 1242 petrol that the odd one or two have added. I would look at the size first before any other consideration as there is very little space in the Mk3 for the diesel never mind the Mk2.

So the MJ in the mk3 is a tight fit then

Hmmm, looks like idea is already out of the window then :p

I'll take some pics if you wish...........

The MK3 is about 250kg heavier than the MK2 so with the 1242 turbo it would go well. It's pretty good in the MK3 so would be superb in the MK2...

Thanks for the photo's idea, don't put yourself out to do it Alan, but if out and about taking pic's of the car then a few would be great (y)

That's what appeals to me. A fairly powerful lump for the car's weight, and economy :yum:

Jon,

If you can do it your economy would be amazing, in the MK3 it already has clocked up 70 - 80 MPG, with the (what appears to be) lighter MK2 body going to the filling station will be an extremely rare event :D

If you do grab the MK3 you will get your hand bitten off for the roof rails if it has them, & I would like to be in the queue :D :D

Thanks for the info Trev, you can definatly be first in the queue if you want the rails :p (y)

I've got to source one first. Ebay seems to be good for salvage mk3's. but I've yet to see a MJ. And I doubt I'd get one a reasonable price.

At least there should be a fair number of parts that I can use, and anything left (which there will probably be alot) can be re-sold either to forum members or on eBay.

Jon.
