In addition to temp gauge giving up I think my clutch is probably due for renewal as the car has done 90k on this one. Any idea how much I should pay for a replacement and whether I should do anything else connected to it at same time ?
I’m in Oldham if any recommendations.
Cheers Paul

I have a bill from 2018 to supply and fit a clutch kit, well worth getting anything
like the thrust bearing done wile their in there as labor is the biggest cost,
£200 labor
129 for the clutch kit
plus 20% vat £65
£395 total
this is in the Wyre, Fylde coast area.

I paid a similar amount 18 months ago. I recently had the drive shafts out to replace the oil seals. I suggest you get them done while the gearbox is removed. The gear oil cost me nearly £40 !!!

Also check the clutch hydraulics are behaving. Worn master cylinders pull in air and new seals are not available. This is a replacement master cylinder

You "can" get prefilled master with blue pipe but costs can be silly money.

just fixed a gearbox and fitted a new clutch

clutch was £40 something. Same as the clutch centres fit

the oil was £13

Thats without trade discount

i did replace the oil seals but that including the input shaft

if you were doing them everyday on a ramp with air tools it shouldn't take more than two hours and thats very generous. There's a YouTube video of a Punto gearbox taken off in 1/2 an hour.

I have to drop the gearbox but on a transmission stand it can just be moved out of the way.

I went for the GL-5 full synth gear oil as stated in the car's user manual. The cost was a surprise, but I was clearly seen coming by my local spares shop. :(

as I rebuilt the gearbox I tested First with engine oil I had left over

took it up to 70 mph on axle stands let if run for awhile in each gear then drain and filled with semi synth GL5

I figured on just changing the oil if the car lasts okay. Full synth only extends to service period

same as which engine oil which is the best threads. As long as there's clean oil thats roughly correct is better than correct oil thats dirty or low.

looking at the two failed gearboxes both failed due to over heating of the bearing destroying the bearings plastic cage

there is an oil passage that feed oil into the bearing.

looks to me as if both gearboxes failed due to low oil.

Neither box show much wear on the gears

Nice one thanks.

It’s in the garage as of this morning so at least I’ve an idea of what things should cost. Will get hydraulics done at same time ?

The Honda gearbox used by Rover cars and the Civic used 20-50 oil "filled for life". I changed mine at 70,000 and it was still doing fine at 140,000 when I sold it.
