Gift from my grandfather...

He used to race Fiats. He gave me a classic 124 with 2 engines, hard top and soft top, a trunk full of parts, 2 sets of wheels, one mag and the other ones in the pics. I'm the second owner. Everything on this car is original. He also gave me out-of-print manuals including a service manual. I haven't looked through them yet, but they might be a good resource for this forum.

I need to rebuild the engine and transmission. I am considering post as I go. I might need help as it is happening. The dash has cracked, the seats need to be re-done, the rag top needs new fabric, it needs new paint, and the chrome needs to be freshened up. After all, it is a '69. This car does not have many miles on it at all.

Re: Gift from my grandfather...

If the car doesn't have many miles on it do you really need to rebuild the engine and transmission?

IF the vehicle has been stood in DAMP conditions then the motor..maybe,
trans. should stand the test of time..

@FiatUser2017 will of course have his own agenda for the car

and most tech. minded people would take precautions before laying up a cherished vehicle.

of course circumstances play a part,

Charlie

Re: Gift from my grandfather...

@rallycinq Thank you!!

@F123C The story is that my grandma was driving it and she gave me a long winded story with no relevant details. Basically it hasn't been started/run since 1990.

Additionally, I looked up the serial number and it has a 1608cc engine, but since my grandpa used to race he said he bored it out and had it tuned up to run at redline all day long. He said he's not exactly sure it needs it but I should rebuild because it's been sitting for 25 years. Out of respect for him and the desire to know how to fine tune, I instantly agreed. It has a duel Webber carb too, so that's nice. Also with the transmission, he said there's a bent shift fork, so he thinks. To be honest I hate working on transmissions but I'll learn to like it for this.

@Vararsecrazy Exactly! Circumstances. My plans are to try to keep it all original as much as possible. It is a little ugly on the outside, but between a fine-tune bored out Webber duel-carb, and possible a low-boost blow-through turbo (just to get that thing cleaned of exhaust gasses after each detonation), I think she will sound so pretty when she sings, it won't matter what she looks like. Maybe I'll name her Ella, for Ella Fitz. Hah!
