Hi all, i have a problem with my multipla 1.9 jtd. When I got the car (second-hand), it drove fine for a while until things started breaking (clutch, brakes etc.) Even got so far that we had to fix the turbo.
I am now stuck with the problem that it slows down dramatically on a hill and barely has any power. On the highway i manage to go up to a 100 kmh but that's it.
Two days ago, it got so bad that i had to go up the hill in first gear, shortly before hand could only drive 70kmh on the highway (!!!).

After some reading, i blocked of the egr as it threw out a lot of black smoke. Now it drives again, but still slows down on a hill and there is just no power that one should expect. It also throws out white smoke now every now and then.

Any ideas what I could try next or what it could be? This car is quite a lot of trouble and costs a fortune...

Thanks, i have unplugged the MAF sensor now, will check results tomorrow and see

After unplugging the MAF sensor, i now am stuck with a multipla that is smoking a lot of black when going up the hill (nearly always in 2nd gear). My only thought was that maybe it is getting all the dirt out of the system and engine that has gone into it from the egr. Is that possible???
It definitely has more power now, but the black smoke just concerns me

Hi, air filter has been changed about 2 months ago, so it is fairly new. Car showed "oil pressure too low, please switch off car", so filled up a bit of oil. Now that problem is gone, however it smokes white on start up and about 5 minutes thereafter. (and i am saying A LOT of white smoke! We can barely see out the back window). Thereafter it smokes black every time it is put under pressure eg when going up a hill. Planning to do an oil change asap. However another problem that has just started is that car will not start. Even after just driving on a highway for about 40 minute, it will not start again after 10 minutes of standing.
Checked the battery level, all fine. Could this now be alternator or start up problem??? Car is driving me insane...

Detached it from battery yesterday, will see now if anything changed but my hopes are low. Main problem is the start up now. Any ideas?

What actually happens when car wont start?
Does still crank?
All this problems i think are all related with some sensor faults like lambda, crank and cam sensors or maf
You are not gonna get to the bottom of it unless you have the ecu read to see what fault codes are stored in it
Get yourself a vag cable from ebay and a free copy of the ecu multiscan from the net and do it yourself, or if you cant do that any garage with the right equipment should read fault codes for a small fee;)

Was that when driving, or just at start-up?
If the oil level is a bit low (OO_ _ _ _ on the display for example), and you throw it hard round a sharp bend, then you'll get that warning, but it should clear within a few seconds.
I don't trust the oil level display, always check it with the dipstick.
Mine gives spurious level readings all the time.

I agree with turbo_pib about checking out the fault codes.

Lack of power/speed sounds a bit like it's going into 'limp' mode, when there's a fault with the engine management, but you should get a warning (Engine Control Fault) with that.
Mine does it occasionally, and it won't rev over 3000rpm until it clears (good for 80mph).

It gave the oil warning while driving BikeDoc.
turbo_pib when it did not start, it made like a kgrr noise. Engine moved but nothing happened.

It could be that oil level was low and when driving you went uphill or downhill and sensor thought that no oil was there...keep an eye on dipstick once a week and should be fine
Regarding the starting problem it could be a cam or crank sensor fault
You need to have ecu fault code read so you can get to the bottom of it, all this guessing will just get you more frustrated;)

Thanks for your help=) Exchanged the battery now seems the not starting was its fault. Will however have to still figure out why it throws out black smoke. After taking out battery for a while, and ecu being resetted, i now have immense cloud of white smoke when standing. Then I just have black smoke when driving too hard, if one drives very very softly it does not throw out black smoke. Will however get a ecu reading done

Hi all, once again trouble with the multipla again. It suddenly had a huge loss of power, even after removing the maf sensor and blocking off the egr valve. The fan belt was also trashed once again which had to be replaced, the part that brakes it was bought new but somehow it ended up braking once again. Still waiting for fiat to give a new one as still under guarantee. However, i noticed today that the egr valve had sucked the tin in  . It does now not drive faster than 40 up a hill. All i can hope is the engine melted the tin somehow ????
After now blocking off the egr valve again, it seems to be pulling much better again however there are huge amounts of black smoke if one accelerates. (Note that all the smoke disappeared after the car suddenly stopped smoking).

However why is it smoking when the egr is blocked off??? Shouldnt it be the other way around? And is it possible that the fan belt is linked to smoke as well although it seemed impossible?
