Please need help urgently. Last night while replacing whole clutch on our Fiat Multipla 1.6 petrol the mechanic snapped the gear selector cable. He is working today and has asked me to remove old one so he can put a new one on tonight (just one of those things i suppose).

How much is a new one please and can anyone tell me how to get old one off just to save time??

Thanks in advance for all replies

how are the old ones fixed? ball joints? if so get some leverage under it, screwdriver and pop it off, then follow it back to where it goes to the gearstick, you may have to remove exhause mid section and a heat sheild to get to this and to see it. then indo the bottom of the gearstick assembly and unclip it from the stick. then put the new one in. i wouldnt get a new one id ring local scrap yards.

OUCH! not available on their own just in pairs at £110 sorry to be the bearer of bad news (n) mine had been welded when i broke mine from a previous clutch change.
I re welded mine all is well:D.

If he had followed the "how to " on here he would have removed both cables insitu on their holder.:(

Actually mine was a JTD maybe some hope if yours is a petrol , ring the dealers.......

Thanks for your replys. I have had it welded as we are selling vehicle anyway so no worries.

Hi.
I have a mk 3 (55reg) and last night whilst driving home my gears went all loose. The garage says i need 2 new gear calbles. Another post on here said they only come in pairs but he said he has 1 another on order. (£110) does anyone know if it is likely 2 have gone. I have had this problem before but it was 2.5years ago under warenty so dont know what they did (took it somewhere else that time).

thanks

My comments are relating to the diesel models only, Take the leatherette surround away from the gearstick and look inside with a torch , can you see both of the cables still attatched? if not get yourself a small prybar and try to pop them back on.There is a good chance in this weather that they can pop off because the cables are semi frozen and heavy handed use.If they look ok then you need to check the engine end, there is a pipe that runs along the front of the engine feeding the airfliter box pull it out from the box.The box sits on a couple of rubber mounts and a side mount but with a little effort it can be lifted straight up to give access (you may want to dissconnect the inlet pipe with the maf to avoid damage) underneath.Once removed or placed to one side you should be able to look under the rear of the battery tray to see the other end of the cables on top of the gearbox.Get someone to give the gearstick a good old wiggle and see if both or just one of the cables has gone, prob just one.Once you have identified the issue with one or both ofthe cables try a private message to booklady on here as her partner was breaking multi's on ebay and did have cables for a petrol model a while ago but not diesel but might have some now.I refused to pay the rediculas £110 for 2 cables and they are only able to order as the pair.

Wow note to myself , must leave gaps and paragraphs i never look up when iam typing.Thats why i spell so badly.

£110 seems to be close to the going rate for cables these days. Focus cables are about £90 a pair, peugot 307 similar. Fwd transit ones are sold individually but are £80 EACH! Don't think I'd want 2nd hand ones though, if they'd been sitting around in a dead car for months they're not going to be so smooth are they?

i was driving along today and my gearbox made a mini bang, the gearstick became very loose in movement and wouldnt go into gear, Although it was stuck in 2nd gear, the clutch still works fine, somebody suggested that this could be the same problem, whatdo you think and will my warrenty cover it

Ouch. Broke a gear cable whilst doing the clutch. Fiat currently want £186 for the gear cables
Looks like I'll be trying to weld the end on after it was broken or hunting for a 2nd hand set.
