Technical General Wear & Tear Clutch 16,000 Miles

If it was a Triumph Herald I'd say that the engine crankshaft thrust washers had fallen out and the crank shaft was gradually grinding the side walls of the bearings away each time you press the clutch pedal so most of the clutch release bearing movement is pushing the crankshaft, not operating the clutch. Has the crank end float been checked?
Alternatively if the release bearing sits on a carrier, perhaps the hinge of the carrier has too much play.....But it's a Multipla so it probably isn't the same:confused:

Spoke to the dealership again yesterday, they say that Fiats Tech specialist was down on Friday and suggest a brand new Clutch fitted again. This was done with still the same fault. He has now ordered a later batch of Clutch as he feels that there may be a number of faulty clutches out there, so they have ordered the very latest Clutch and is fitting another today, to see if that rectifies, if this fails they really cannot see what the fault is.

Fiat Dealership. Fiat Auto Group, based in Westcliff On Sea in Essex.
This sounds like the problem I am having right now with my car. There was also a burning rubber smell just before my clutch broke. Car refused to go into gear whilst I was driving!!! Just stayed in neutral.

Trix41 your problem sounds like the Dual Mass Flywheel has gone. This can show up like a clutch fault - very common on diesel VW Golfs where it can cost well over £1K to fix. How old is your car?

Spoke to the Dealership again today. They said that a later batch of Clutch had been recieved and installed. They say that the car seems ok at the moment, however they are driving it about to see if another fault occurs.

It doesnt really matter what they do with it as I am rejecting it. It has been in the dealership for about 2 months. Considering the car was only 6 months when the problem occurred and considering the vechile is supposed to be a working vechile it really isn't good enough. Also as the vechile took six months and 16,000 miles to get the first occurence of the fault, I am not prepared to take the vechile back as it could go wrong again within another six months. Also the amount of cluthces the dealer had to put in, shows that there is a big problem with them.

Add to that the fact that they probably put a zipper between the box and engine, to make it easy to get in next time.
If I were you I guess I would be doing the same.

My clutch went at 37,000 miles, 21,000 of which were mine and I know I'm not heavy on clutches. Very surprised.

Mate I feel for you. I use mine for light chauffeuring and a lot of private mileage. It's been a nightmare fella. Below is a post I have made on the Yahoo group Mltipla forum, another good source of info and chat on theMultipla. You think you've had troubles......

Fortunately, I'm a Fiat freak and am blind to it all.....

"Well, She's been at it again.

This time 3 or 4 breakdowns and a troublesome fault finding escapade
resulting in a bill of £421.36

Engine management light comes on and she dies. AA recovers to main
dealers. Fixes. Same again. Fixes. Same again. Now working. I
think. Phase sensor and rpm sensor seemed to be the trouble and had
glow plugs replaced at the same time as two had gone home.

Will tell this story in greater length soon but thought I'd bring you
up to date with the costings. Last reported these to you on 14th
June last year. Here we go then. Go on laugh, you buggers!

Given that my Multi has had just about everything go wrong with it in
the last 2 years or so, I thought it may be of some use to members to
see some of the costings of servicing, repairs and/or parts in case
any of you have the same problems. Its an 02 Jtd Elx. All prices are
Fiat main dealer unless otherwise stated and inc. vat.

Thats about the lot I think. May be something I missed but don't
think so.

I bought the car in October 2006 with 16000 miles on it and all this
has occured in this time and the car has still only covered 75,700
miles!

This doesn't cover things like bulbs, wiper blades etc or the towbar
and fitting or the interior mat set!

Hope this helps some people in pricing up their problems and getting
value for money.

As of today issued Court Proceedings against Glyn Hopkin who sold the Multipla, will keep you posted.

Clutch - £443.79 (Fiat fitted.) Aug 2006

blimey...My clutch went last week.. I'd asked a month ago at Fiat dealer and was quoted £606... the very same bloke quoted £645 2 weeks later...

what did I do?

I can happily tell you I traded it in for £1500 against a Citroen Berlingo :)
I miss the old Multi, but hey... it had 78000 miles against the 7200 miles in the Citroen.

Yeah, they quoted me about £600 then I asked them what they could actually do it for, and hey ho negotiations completed with a written estimate of that £400+. My advice is talk to them and see what they can do.

just got done for £680 for clutch and £250 for flywheel at local garage. hasn't solved problrm and they are now looking at replacing slave cylinder. isn't life wonderful!

I have a multipla that has done 145th Miles and had it first clutch replaced at 130th miles.
It seems that there could be a fault with the cylinders that are being fitted. Or maybe an alignment issue which is causing the problem.
I had a problem with a component a few years ago And despite the agent insisting that there was nothing wrong.
It turned out that the whole consignment was faulty which had to be returned to japan.

I will be appearing in Court in Oct of this year. I cannot believe myself as to how long this has taken to play out, however should be able to advise more at that point.
