Jacko the 4x4 Climbing

Introducing Jacko the 4x4 Climbing, bought from the classifieds on here this week, all the way from Leighton Buzzard to Halifax.

Lovely little motor, can't wait to try it in anger on some slippery stuff!

Only problem so far is the red steering ideogram has lit itself up.
I've ordered a new battery and hope that will sort it out, there is no problem with steering itself.

The plan is to keep it fairly standard though I am very tempted by the 25mm extra height I could gain from these:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2212724528...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

coupled with some steelies with some suitable rubber I reckon it could be better than Doms PandaXL at off roading!

Oh and @Palio - look away now unless you want to swap scruffbag for Jacko:

When's the next off road day @AndyPanda4x4 ?

Seats are a bit grubby!

I'll swap you a grubby one for a clean (but broken) one! Not sure about the whole car - I'll wait for you to fix the power steering & then we can compare them off-roading. I've got quite attached to my red one already, but never say never - it's not really buying another car if we swap them is it?

Nice car, those seats definitely need a clean though!

Re: Jacko the 4x4 Climbing

They are good, reliable cars but painfully slow, my dad drives one.

390€ for springs is a lot of money.

You could probably get springcoil to custom make you a set of springs that make the car sit higher for about 200 or less probably.

Slow but plenty of character. I've run one as a daily for 4 years now along side a e92 m3 and never found it wanting. Been totally reliable too.

Nothing really, just a part time 4x4 system

There is a difference John - at least compared to non UK versions. I saw a comparison somewhere when I was looking & the climbing is longer front & rear. Have a look at this old thread ( also see @Most Easterly Pandas doing a spot of mk2/3 Panda edikation! ).

https://www.fiatforum.com/panda/2928...-climbing.html

Mine is a climbing but doesn't have the climbing badge, though I might get one!

Hmmm I;ve read that before and thought it applied to the european models on the continent only?

If not I really don't know anything apart from fiats random method of sticking badges on cars when it feels like it!

I'm confused by the "permanent 4wd" on the side trims - it's an automatic system isn't it

I thought they had viscous (though I always want to say "vicous") coupling but gather some have an electronic (again automatic) system to engage the rear wheels when the front grip slips.

Anyway, I'm actively looking for a bit off open ground to have a go at making the rear wheels do their stuff

Very happy with the over the speed bump performance and higher driving position so far though

It's permanent as in you don't need to select it I assume? Just another bit of marketing tripe!!

Is ours the vicious (much better! ) one & the new one electronic? I think someone said something like that, but I don't pretend to understand the technicalities......

As you know from the offroading they are remarkably smooth on vicious stuff - as you've discovered that transfers very nicely onto our bomb cratered roads & speed hump fetish!

Re: Jacko the 4x4 Climbing

I put a new Bosch battery on yesterday - 45 delivered to my door!

After a bit of swearage at the rusted tray bolt and dropping the socket deep into the engine bay it's in!

How vital is that paste stuff? There wasn't any on the terminals of the old one and I don't have any.

Anyway, the red steering wheel light went off for a bit, back on then off again - I presume the battery is finding its level of charge at the moment.

As a complete non-spannerist I was pretty chuffed with my efforts megre though they are compared to you advanced mechanicalists out there!

Next job I'm actually good(ish) at - changing the wipers

Re: Jacko the 4x4 Climbing

The passenger side wiper stopped working the other day, armed with my new Haynes manual I took off the front gutter thingy ( white clips pinging off broken ) to find the wiper linkage has dropped off underneath never to be attached again!

I've ordered a "punto linkage repair wotsit" to, er, repair it.
Anyone had any success with this?

No idea how it's fixed - I'd assume the linkage bar slips onto a circular post which is then held in place by a circlip or a split pin. Does the Haynes not go into the detail

No the Haynes doesn't go into detail - Fiat seem to think the motor and linkage should be replaced as a unit at great cost.
Without taking the whole assembly out it is difficult to see how it attaches but it's along the lines of a ball and socket with a plastic washer securing it. Of course the washer is worn away and a thin lip survives but of no use what so ever.

It was quite a challenge doing this as the snow was falling yesterday and I had to use jacko with just the drivers wiper working.

I hope the assembly is the same as the punto and the clips I've ordered will do the job

Re: Jacko the 4x4 Climbing

Thought I'd post a few pics I took today of the car that will appear in the classifieds add shortly.

The steering motor has been replaced and no problems with fault light (the steering never went heavy) since then.

Rear brake discs and pads have been replaced.

I think it had a ball joint for the MOT but you can check that online with the new .gov thingy.

11 months MOT, 102k and a cracking little car, every time I drive it I don't want to part with it.

I never did get around to off-roading in this though as @Palio will attest they are more than competent.

close ups of the only body damage I could find, though it will have a few stone chips on the bonnet these won't photograph well.
