Bravo (Classic) Fiat Bravo HGT 155

Introduction

I've not been in a Fiat for quite some time now. Had a brief stint in a MK1 Punto Sporting around a year ago but that didn't end so well...

Following on from this thread : https://www.fiatforum.com/bravo-brava/331170-my-new-hgt.html .. A few weeks ago I left work to catch a train to Carlisle where I met F1ANG (and his puppy :D) only to drive away half an hour later in yet another Fiat. Number 25 infact...

It's a Fiat Bravo HGT 155, pretty much as it left the factory. Obviously well looked after by F1ANG and previous owners. Lovely car to drive and that 20v, 5 pot sound is just glorious.

There's a few bits and bobs I want to sort, namely the handles (typical perished affair) and this and that. Today I set about replacing one fault, a broken check strap.

PB150449.jpg

Interesting how it was broken. The mount on the chassis itself was snapped in 2 with the check strap itself pushed right in. I ordered up a replacement part from ebay (used) which arrived yesterday. Day off today so set about getting it swapped...

PB150458.jpg

Old strap out. Actually seems to be in good condition. Cleaner than my replacement but something must have caused the mount to snap so I ditched it regardless...

Replacement strap ready to go in...

And there we go! All done and the door now holds itself open, which is nice :) Shame it came off a car of a different colour. Should have sprayed the mount before fitting actually but never thought to :bang:

I'll keep this thread updated as I go and hoping to get to some events and meets soon. Most likely be at the usual bigguns next year (y)
I would recommend the G3 reflectors
They curved rather than angled
And suit the car better ;)

Hmm yeah they look nice. The Heko ones i've ordered look decent though. I'll just have to wait for them to turn up and see what I think.

Yup, filter was a state. I'll be checking the new one in a month or so to see the condition. If it's grubby I'll look at replacing the airbox. Currently has no bottom and has been meshed over by the previous owner. Makes a lovely sound but as said, it sucks air from inside the passenger wing which I can't imagine is the cleanest place to get it from...

Little update again.. Got a free morning today where it wasn't raining and the drive wasn't too damp so went out and did the oil and filter change to finish off the service I had planned.

Bought some engine flush as well and popped that in for 20 mins prior to draining the oil.

One thing to mention... The oil filter is a right bitch to replace on these :bang: No room what so ever to get any tools in and not enough room to get a decent grip on the filter to attempt to remove by hand. Ended up hammering a long screw driver into the filter, levering it a few cm and then having to hammer the screw driver in at another point to repeat. Took 4 holes before the filter was loose enough to remove by hand.

Job done though. Also spend 10 mins cleaning out the throttle body and MAF whilst waiting for the oil to settle when topping up. Oh and one other thing... I bought a fuel filter to finish off the service as well, supposedly for my car, but having searched for it around the car and coming up at a loss, I did a bit of googling and discovered that the 155 doesn't have a serviceable fuel filter? It's built into the fuel tank/pump or something? Is that right?

Quick drive out later now sporting the clear side repeaters and wind deflectors mentioned a few posts back. Love what a difference the clear repeaters make to the car. Something so simple and cheap really makes the car look so much better.

Still not convinced on the wind deflectors yet. Some angles I like them, others I think I prefer without. Suppose i'll get used to them :) Needs lowering more than anything else at the moment imo. Potentially getting my hands on a set of coilovers shortly anyway so we'll see

I don't have experience personaly with the HGT. My 1.4 and 1.8 both had fuel filters underneath the car, infront of the drivers side rear wheel behind the plastic trim that covers the floor. You can see an explination to take it off here;

This is what the filter looked like the pipe fittings are removable without tools;

Ive checked the manual I have, it looks like the 147 has an out of tank filter while the 155 does not. Heres the pages.

EDIT: Forgot to ask, did you look under that plastic cover for the fuel filter?

Cheers for the info Adrian and cfreitas.

I never looked behind the plastic liner in the rear arch. Dug up an old post on ff via google saying the 147 has a filter but the 155 doesn't. Annoying though as eurocarparts listed one for my car with the reg entered. Only a few quid but still annoying. Ah well.

So what's the deal? Would I have to replace the fuel pump/tank if it ever became clogged? I've no issues, just something I would usually service every so often on any other car.

pretty common to only have the bad filter on the bottom of the fuel pump in the tank.. Very rare to have to need to change one tbh so i wouldn't worry, they are meant to be non-service items... Would perhaps look at changing one if you ever have to go in the tank for some reason and the car is getting on, like if a pump failed.

Another update for the Bravo (y)

Thanks to F1ANG , the previous owner of the car, I acquired a set of lowering springs. Unknown spec really but the original springs on the car had seen much better days and it would have been rude to replace them and not get some aftermarket kit on there.

Didn't take many pictures of the fitting unfortunately but here's what I have...

The springs ready to go on.

Old and new comparison for the fronts.

Giving the front shocks a good clean up.

IMG_20150206_120152.jpg

Old and new comparison for the rears.

So fitting went without a hitch. Also gave all arches a really good scrub with the same stuff I used on the shocks. The inner arches are as clean as as whistle. Outer arches do need some attention which I will be getting onto as soon as the weather starts warming up a bit.

One of the front wings has a little bubbly patch. Been there the whole time i've had the car but has got a bit worse over the winter so will defo be grinding that back and sorting it out. One of the rear arches has a tiny tiny bubble spot, so will look at that too, but will grind down the inner lips on both rear arches and give them a new coat of zinc primer and colour. Just to be safe (y)

There really is little else to do on the underside. The rear subframe has surface rust but isn't bad at all. The chassis itself is very clean. Couple of areas will rub back and coat but otherwise it's all good :slayer:

Been a while since I updated this thread so thought I would. Been a relatively uneventful month or two with the Bravo but as always with older cars, something always needs sorting :bang:

Probably the last 4-5 months or so I noticed the car would randomly stall at junctions when coming to a stop. Maybe once every couple of weeks it would happen with no warning lights or any other symptoms. Running was perfect, fuel consumption as normal etc. Only noticeable issues were the intermittent stalling and that sometimes the idle would dip very close to stalling when stopping but very quickly recover and idle normally. Started to bug me so did a bit of research and decided I would look at replacing the MAF. Bought a genuine Bosch jobbie from Euro Car Parts and got it in. All seemed good at first. The car seemed to run noticeably better at first and the stalling disappeared for a few weeks but then of course, it returned :bang:

Bit more delving into the deep depths of google and came across some some people having issues with n/a VIS coupes on FCCUK with similar symptoms. All pointing at the crank case non-return valve or the the throttle body. Spent an evening stripping and cleaning out the non-return valve (to be fair it wasn't dirty) and trying a few suggestions from FCCUK to no avail. The idle dip and stalling was still there. Stripped and totally gutted the throttle body the next day. Gave it a proper good clean out and it looked as good as new by the time I had finished with it. There was quite a bit of dried on gunk around the butterfly. Was slightly horrified when I went and fit it back on  ...

First start up, injector warning light  .. check i've plugged the maf back in, yup  .. ignition on again and warning light still there so start it up... ... idle all over the place.. going from 1200rpm and dipping to 500rpm up and down really quickly.. Left it for a bit to see if it would settle and didn't get any joy. Took it for a drive around the block and it stalled every time the clutch was put in :bang::bang::bang: Checked everything over and all was plugged in, sealed tight etc. Was at a loss and kicking myself for ****ing something up so decided to just strip it all back down again and see if i could spot anything obvious... Nothing.. Put it back together again and guess what... Perfect :D bastard Fiats.

The Bravo's been running better than it ever has the last few weeks since cleaning out the throttle body. :slayer: Kinda annoyed I don't have any pictures of the above. Did most of it either in the dark by torch or was too concerned I had broken everything to take pictures (n) I did get this on my phone the other day though...

Also have a few pics on my DSLR I will get around to uploading later.

just outta interest, do these engines have an egr valve? Often the cause of dirty TB and inlets in general, they were always a stupid invention in my view. I know cento's don't have them and although i have seen them with coked up dirty TBs, mine have always stayed really clean and look brand new basically. My alfa 159 started having running issues at only 60k and that was cause of the egr, a friends car kept having issues that was solved by cleaning the TB but was ultimately getting sirty cause of the egr sticking (did eventually get blanking plate and never had an issue since). They just seem to be something that is always gonna go wrong eventually with very bad results, and even if they don't go wrong eventually the inlet get coked up and needs all cleaning out.

ok rant over, bet it turns out these don't even have them now haha

Nope no EGR valve on these :D ;)

Pre throttle body is airfilter into MAF straight into the throttle body. The only recirculation on the intake is off the crank case (feeds in just before the throttle body) which is open and constant and also a feed off the crank case which feeds in just after the throttle body which has a non return valve that opens and closes based on pressure.

The only dirt on the throttle body was basicaly black hard gunk that had built up around where the butterfly closes, so when it was closing after coming off the throttle, the gunk would have been preventing either enough air getting past the butterfly or disrupting the flow enough to cause upset.

Going by FCCUK, the VIS inlet system is a balance which is easily upset, and considering how little gunk there was in the throttle body, it's easy to see how easily upset it can get :D

^ Piccie I forgot to upload :)

Also - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2000-Fiat-Bravo-HGT-155-VIS-Silver-/111631819531?

Time could be up for me and the HGT. I'm not so sure though. Possibly asking too much in the current market but to be fair, it's worth every penny if you ask me.

Still, if everyone just thinks i'm taking the ****, I'll gladly keep it. Just fancy something without a roof :) have done for a few years.
