Astra H 1.6 VVT SXI

Introduction

Hello everybody,
Some of you may already know me, I recently upgraded cars from a 1.2 Fiat Grande Punto to this 1.6 SXI with XP kit and penta alloys. Higher miles than the GP but I won't be driving it long as off to uni in September!
I bought it cheap as it is scrapped down the side and the alloys are in poor condition, but have already refurbed one of the alloys, replaced the damaged front wing and the rest of the cosmetic damage (scuff on front bumper, scrape down door, scuffs on rear quarter panel) is getting repaired next week.

I plan on doing a few subtle things to improve the car aesthetically (from my point of view) so peoples opinions are welcome :)

Already removed the 'astra' off the boot trim:

A man bought and took away the Punto today but here is a picture of the two together:

The other day I also put black vinyl behind the griffin badge, and also a bit of red detailing

As the calipers are very obvious with the penta alloys, I decided to paint the calipers red!

I am in the H club as well

I have a 5 door, dont like the look of the rear of the 3 door and the bootspace is poor for me, even worse than the 5 door

Speedo lights look good, id consider doing all the interior now in that colour if you can

Id go for the crusie control mod if you havent done it already next...if you havent got CC fitted

Each to their own then as I don't like the look of the rear of the 5 door, looks too flat. In my opinion the 3 door rear looks much sportier. I agree, the boot space isn't brilliant due to the awkward shape but it's better than my previous car and plenty for me. If you want boot space, get an estate :p

Thank you. I do plan on doing the rest, when I have the time and know-how.

Cruise control is also something I have looked at, as £30~ for a new stalk you can't go wrong really!

looks like someone is having the same luck as me lately . sorry to hear you had a road incident (....yeah lets call it that ) people driving 4x4's should have to take another test to do so they think they are king of the road.... until a little orange power machine comes roaring by and gives them some of their own medicine  then sits infront of them at stupidly slow speeds (also known as the speed limit) just to please them that little bit more :D

 the number of awful drivers on the road astounds me!
Haha brilliant! ;) 4x4 drivers really do think they own the road, 90% of them don't need a car that large either, they're simply fuel guzzlers! Either way I've had to spend £30 on a new fog light as it was completely obliterated from hitting the bank and the car will be going back into the bodyshop to have the paintwork sorted.

Few more little mods/things in the pipeline..

Another picture of the dials in the dark:

More to come; going to do the rest of the car such as stereo and display etc.

Had nothing to do the other night so went out and tried to take some nice photos. Couldn't get camera to work properly with the heavy snow, the camera was so confused so they're not brilliant.

And then a general sort of question which I'm sure someone could answer:

I'm considering a remap but I know as a NA engine it won't be much, but I've seen places offering a gain of 11bhp. Will this dramatically affect my mpg and is it worth it? I'm going to de-restrict the airbox (astra airbox is very restrictive) and fit a vxr intake, so with a remap I might be able to get 130bhp from the standard 115? Will removing the middle silencer improve performance and sound at all? As I have seen straight middle sections without the silencer for around £50-60. Or will it make next to no difference? Thanks!

Generally a better flowing intake and exhaust will give gains even before a remap, a straight through mid section will give you a better flow but the stock backbox can be restricting aswell, a full exhaust and decat can give up to 10% gains premap In cases :) ask Brin for a quote on his map as you have the same car :)

Thanks for that mate, just the answer I was looking for :) I will speak to him, cheers!

VXR intake arrived today so I set about fitting it and derestricting the airbox. I didn't fit an aftermarket panel filter such as K&N as I replaced the filter only a few hundred miles ago so still clean and fresh.
The top pipe from the airbox had already been removed, but the bottom hadn't. That was a massive pain to get out, had to get my dad to get it out for me
Anyway, here is just a comparison photo incase anyone hasn't really seen the difference
The car revs a lot better now and has better acceleration and throttle response. Sounds slightly nicer too, definitely worth it

The car was absolutely filthy so I gave it it's first properly thorough clean and then waxed it.

Wrapped the wheel bolt covers in gloss black vinyl as they'd gone all horrible and stained:

im not saying dont go to brin but how much of a come back if your map melts a piston from him ? with a Company you could claim off them ,

You wont get a reply given he is banned
he has a strop about people questioning his skills/abilities

If anyone noticed, the mileage display on the clocks wasn't showing properly. This was due to the plug on the back not being connected properly, it is working properly now and it looks awesome if I do say so myself! :p In the photos the needles look slightly purple but they are very blue. Look so much better in person.
As you can see I also done the headlight switch panel with left over SMD's. When I've got round to ordering the rest of the SMD's I will be doing the steering wheel controls, main display, cd player, heater controls and window switches!

Your astra really is starting to take shape mate :D keep in touch.

Stephen

Thanks dude :D

Fitted parking sensors yesterday. I bought them for my mums car (hence why they're black) but she didn't really want them so said I should just put them in mine... so I did  - ordered some moonland paint so when that arrives will colour code them and will also colour code the front chrome V grill and if I have enough left, the chrome boot trim (I like the look of it colour coded)

Hello Luke mate,

What a difference having the badge removed from the rear makes to the Astra! (y)

I would like to see the chrome wrapped mate, I will be keeping an eye on this mate :)

Regards
Stephen

I agree (y) I wasn't sure on whether I'd like it or not first but once it was off I loved it.

Might have some spare vinyl lying around so will give it a quick wrap if so. If not, got some paint on the way to colour code!

Cheers bud
