Has anyone tried adding sound proofing to quieten the road noise and what did you do / did it work / where did you get the kit from / how much did it cost?

Have a weekend automatic and it's very noisy compared to other cars, that is noise from the engine / gearbox / front tyres rather than wind noise. I should add that the car is low mileage, under 4 years old and mechanically fine so I guess Fiat just skimped on sound deadening material or perhaps didn't even bother on this model, which is a shame.

Thanks for your help.

i guess your previous car was a mercedes or volvo if you think the marea is noisey. i've used sound deadening mat on a variety of cars, usually when you install a serious amount of ice. its available from halfrauds but its not cheap. i mostly use fibrefill instead, the same stuff you'll have in your loft for insulation. you can try packing the inside of the bulkhead with some but i doubt it will make much difference.

maybe your car is making more noise than it should, i've never heard anyone call a marea noisey, rattly yes, but noisey never. try changing the auto transmission fluid or switch to quiet tyres. maybe your brakes are making the noise, or wheel brearings, or tyres aren't inflated enough, or the air filter has been removed, or maybe there is an aftemarket boyracer airfilter, or an exhaust leak, or aftermarket boyracer exhaust, or maybe you've just been spoilt by your previous cars.

I've only had my Weekend (manual diesel) for a couple of weeks, but I find it a lot quieter than previous cars that I've owned, (including the wife's Mercedes A Class):D . The engine noise is only audible on hard acceleration and the road noise is very quiet at most speeds (except on rough road surfaces).
The car is fitted with Energy tyres and everything is bog standard - must be something different on yours:confused:

My dear friend, ia have the same problem with my Marea 1.6 16V. I used to own an OPEL CORSA which was 100 times more quiet, but since i turned to Marea the engine noise is killing me. I even changes 15" rims to 14" whit soft tyres (Michellin Energy) but the problem is still there. Now the road noise is a lot more quiet but the engine noise, especially when i get over 3000 rpm is huge. Somebody gave me an idea, to put a thick piece of underfelt (the material use to fill the mattresses) under the carver behind the driver's pedals up to the codrivers foot compartment. I must say, althought that i haven't tried it yet.

I forgot to say that i have already visited my local Fiat consumer about the noise problem and have checked all those "or the air filter has been removed, or maybe there is an aftemarket boyracer airfilter, or an exhaust leak, or aftermarket boyracer exhaust", but nothing at all. The Fiat mechanic says its normal. So i'm thinking of changing car, again.
