Turbo? Hello, what's this you've done since I was last here? (Which was like, January when you were just about to put the 1.2 in iirc)

Optimax/Ultimate is 84.9pence around here. Drive about 8miles up the road into Watford (roundabout torwards Alyesbury - Junct. 6 M1) and it's 77.9p (72.9p for normal unleaded).

Anyways, I've got a '98 Marea. Would it have this knock sensor? I've noticed a lot of improvement of using Optimax/Ultimate over "normal" fuel. The noise and smoothness basically.

I rekon the price makes the car run better or maybe its just the psyche of a tight fisted git[?]

Plain old unleaded is 72.5 in Dewsbury at Sainsburys and Esso :D

Apparently aviation fuel (for piston-engined planes) is over 100RON and makes cars go like the clappers [8D]
Probably costs a stack though...

Petrol seems silly expensive everywhere else in the country. Its 73.5p at Shell (normal unleaded) and 78.5 for Optimax. The supermarkets are prolly cheaper but they appear to use really carp fuel. Causes my mothers bitchin Fiesta (will be buying a Sei once the student loans people give me all my money) to conk out on lifting off the throttle with supermarket fuel.

There are only two things that get changed by different styles of fuel, octane number and volatility. Volatility is how likly the fuel is to evapourate. In winter and summer different volatilities are used, a less volatile fuel in summer for example. This is to counter the affects of hotter weather on the fuel. The octane number of how likly the fuel is to auto ignite (or knock) i.e. before the spark is applied. The higher the better as knocking is bad - you lose power.

Jet fuel is basically Kerosene, would be funny to try in a car I am sure....!

As regards to different petrol station's unleaded, if it is the same standard unleaded (octan 95 right?) and not special one elsewhere, it is exactly the same fuel and more than likely from the same oil refinery. Transporting petrol fuel isn't something many people like to do so they rather pump in the oil - e.g. from the north sea and then distribute petrol fuel to the area.

The only thing that can ever really vary is whether the petrol stations have the different volatilities ready for the season.

Optimax can make a different due to the higher octane - I am not arguing otherwise and don't know enough to - but I assume that it only works if you have an engine which is prepared to take the different octane fuel.

Good 'ole chemistry.

Just a thing to say, I plonked some standard Shell unleaded in me Sei Sporting at Branting Hill (A50 near A46 junction, Groby) in Leicester last week and since I turned my key on the forecourt my car had been dead unresponsive. Plonked a tank of Tesco in it yesterday after it ran down all the way and its back to normal now.
Any ideas why this happened?

Hi,

OK OK, bound to get lots of abuse! Or not!

I swear by Shell Optimax in my Ford Mondeo [2 litre c130 bhp]; I also ONLY use Shell Diesel in my 2.2JTD Ulysse. Why? Shell, together with Texaco, are the only fuels to contain the right amount of detergents [that goes for 95 and 98 ron]. Also, the price is offset by the increased mpg [10% potentially], but that is not the issue surely.

Use supermarket fuel? Pay less now, pay for it all later when the engine goes early. And if you read Telegraph Motoring [very few of you, maybe!], no supermarket chain will guarantee their petrol [if you stick to one fuel wholly, there is a potential claim against that fuel supplier if things go pear-shaped!].

At the end of the day, each person has to make that decision for themselves.

Flak time......

Stuart
