I took my remote key fob for a swim by miss take ,I being told it will cost£200 to replace,any ideas of a cheaper way around getting a new circuit board.Could I use one off a scrap fiat and get it reprogrammed.

Do you still have the fob or did you lose it during the swim?

If you have it then open it up and remove the battery. Now wash in circuit board in distilled water, swishing around for a minute or so. Shake of all the excess water and dry with a tissue/soft absorbent cloth. Now put put a layer of dried rice in a bowl. Place circuit board on top of the rice and then cover with another layer of rice. Now place in the airing cupboard for 12 hours. Remove from the rice and leave the circuit board in the airing cupboard for another 12 hours. Leave the case parts in the airing cupboard at the same time for 24 hours. Remove from airing cupboard, reassemble and fit new battery.

The key fob should now work. NOTE! Do not worry if it appears not to work / open the car. This is probably because when the water got in the the key started to transmit lock/unlock codes repeatedly. Because the key fob uses "marching codes" (i.e. each successive code is different the key fob will have advanced beyond the cars "look ahead" algorithm which is designed to cater for missed codes. Just keep trying the lock/unlock repeatedly for 10, 20, 30, 50 times. At some point the marching code will cycle and get back in sync with what the car is looking for.
