buying vauxhaul would be a big mistake as they're direct competitors

One less competitor?

GM look like they're prepared to give it away for free – but with it comes a huge amount of debt.

Hardly, they work together on alot of stuff now anyway. Would mean better economies of scale for them, would be able to pinch the underpinnings of the insignia for quick alfas and get alot of other parts off them aswell.

Re: Fiat to take over Opel & Vauxhall?

Great this would probably lead to alot of fiat's reliability issues been resolved and a car that actually handles well!

I am no huge fan of opel. But hey it would make the opel boys mad if it had to happen.

Re: Fiat to take over Opel & Vauxhall?

vx are hardly a direct competitor
their range dwarfs the fiat line up so they only compete on a few models

Re: Fiat to take over Opel & Vauxhall?

9 years ago GM owned a fair chunk of Fiat s.p.a, Fiat then divorced from them years later taking 'em for quite a bit of money - now Fiat is looking to buy GM or Chrysler

Agreed but the corsa feels alot more solid, poised, sharp. The chasis feels stiffer and so does the suspension resulting in a more involving drive. I think fiat could learn a lot from vauxhall engineers about suspension setups and handling.

I must admit fiat have got it spot on with the range of engines especially T-Jet and M-Jet.

As you can probably tell i'm quite a fan of vauxhall and me and my family have always had vauxhall's.

Im not trying to have a dig at fiat cos i do love my GPS i just wish some things were different.

Fiat's model range is just as large, if not larger than Opel/Vauxhall's, though the range we see in the UK is limited.

Fiat is bigger than Opel/Vauxhall, and sell more cars than they do.

Re: Fiat to take over Opel & Vauxhall?

Personally I can only really see a point in taking over Chrysler in as much as it gives them access to a vast new market and a ready-made dealer network. With regard to GM(E), the market is no bigger and they would have to get rid of some dealers For how long would they be able to keep all those factories running? They'll end up taking on the factories and the debt then have to shut a big chunk of the joint manufacturing capacity and pay out hundreds of millions in redundancy payments.

At the end of all that they'll end up so far in debt they'll end up like Rover being taken over by a Chinese company and have most of the manufacturing carried out over there.

He would go into a corner and turn full lock and the Vectra would just carry on straight. Thats scary to think that such a fast car has bad handling like that. After seeing that i hope Fiat doesn't put Opel suspensions in if they do buy out Opel Lol!

It's from Series 8 Episode 6 16 July 2006.
Main Review: Jeremy tests 3 hot saloons; the Ford Mondeo ST220, the Mazda 6 MPS and the Vauxhall Vectra VXR. The Mondeo achieves a laptime of 1:34.4, while the Mazda 6 an even better 1:32.2. Despite being the fastest car with a 161mph top speed, the Vectra can only manage a time of 1:35.5 due to 'catastrophic' understeer.
