Nothing is more widely used, widely compatible and as well supported as IE.
The single and ONLY reason why the majority of people use firefox/opera etc. is because they think it's cool to be difference, some users make use of some of the options that help advanced users but apart from that, IE rules the joint.

I cannot see how firefox can possibly be quicker - its just the same as those software packages that claim to increase your download speed by 1000%, IMPOSSIBLE.
The browsing speed is controlled by YOUR net connection and YOUR computer. Every operating system from win95 SR2 has IE integrated into the shell, so your computer will only run slower by installing firefox.
anyway, thats only my opinion.
