A friend told me recently that it is now illegal to have ANY type of window tint on the tailgate window and front windows. So legally the only windows you can tint are the rear side ones. Is this true? I can't seem to find reliable source on the net, they all contradict each other.

Personally I can't see it being true because what about vans? Some of them don't even have a window in the back at all so surely this must then also be illegal?

What do you all think?

the arguement continues:)

i never heard this, but i cant why it should be illegal, unless they make it illegal too add after market bits an bobs to your car.

the safest thing to do is not tint at all and where sun glasses:D

thats bulls**t. The law states that you must have all round vision at the reart of your car. If your wing mirrors are sufficient, which most are, there is no need for a rear view anyway. So tints will not affect it.

Over here you can black out everything except front window and the two front door's windows. Police might make a fuzz about the rear window, but as arc says, many vans and taxis have a full plastic cover over it. I don't know the regulations in the UK though...

Its the in the UK now, Mort. There was a law passed in January that effectively means any tinting forward of the B pillar is illegal.

The front windows must have at \least 70% Visible Light Transmission (They must let 70% of available light thru). Most light tint films allow thru, but also, many manufacturers tint their windows as standard to aid UV rejection. So that plus a film means less than 30% VLT. Hence illegal. If someone could findout the VLT of a manufacturer tinted window and compare that to a non tinted window, then appropriate film could be used to keepit legal!!

No, tinting isn't illegal (i.e. act of doing it), having over-dark tints infront of the pillar (front windows and windscreen) below a certain transmistance of light is illegal.

When my parents had their L200 tinted, the company tested all windows first, then put on the max allowed. The front two were already at or near the legal limit, so were not tinted.

Old thread...

Very old thread Joe! Generally can't tint forward of B pillar cos you can't get light enough tints in the first place. You can go as dark as you like behind B pillar, even paint the glass(!). It's a bit like a box van - no rear view mirror cos there's nothing to look at.....

RITE I SHALL SETTLE THIS ONCE AND FOR ALL!!!

Window tints are not illegal!! :p

The rear can be as dark as you want, my tints are limo black the darkest you can get. They are a CH05 film.
The fronts are THE MAXIMUM you can get in the front. They are smoked and are a CH50 film.

It is not illegal to get the fronts done darker, however the police have the right to check the vehicle out and inspect the window for light emissions, if it is found to be illegal. You have a maximum of 12 hours to get rid of the film, or else it will be a further 60 pound fine and 3 points on top of an on the spot 40 pound fine! I have discussed this with cheshire police force so i am not making this up!!

If you do go for them done, go to a professional business and do not do them yourself, as you are open to various dust particles, even in the garage, this will spoil the look!

I think this thread is now closed!!! (y)

the fronts have to let at least 70% light through, so they cannot b darker than 30% tint, which is usually called "light smoke"

however, especially with the newer cars manufacturers (SP) started puttin 5% tint all round when makin the cars just to take the edge off the glass.

i kno a couple of people who has had problems with tinted windows even when only havin light smoke 30% all round, of course makin the front 35 and even 40% in one case without them knowing an bein made to take the tints off!!!

Our Ulysse has factory dark tints to the rear windows and tailgate. On top of that there are sunblinds as well for the rear windows and tailgate. I do know that some police traffic cars have meters to measure the tint on windows.

Andy

nearly all police have one on them, especially the ones that attend cruises.

called the tint master or sumthin, it is a box that shines light into a window and measures the ammount gettin through to .1%

if you car doesnt allow 30% or more through the front and front side windows they can give u a producer for 7 days that says u have to have the tints off by then or get points an a fine!!!

The darkness of the tint is irrelevant. As mentioned it is the amount of light that passes into the car. You can have windows that look totally black from outside all round, as long as from the inside sufficient light is entering, hence you have sufficient visibilty. Unfortunately, if you want them black all round, it can only be achieved by using tinted glass, which works similarly (although is made very differently) to mirrored glass, basically light can only travel one way throught the glass. This stuff is hideously expensive, hence it is usually only seen on very rich people's limo's and the like, although a few manufacturers use them on the security versions of their vehicles as well, although that glass is normally bullet proof as well.

For applied tints, please refer to previous posts.

the only use for tints is stoping the chavs having your 6x9s away from the back shelf becuause the little tw@s cant see them. Proberbly still debadge it for you for free with a chisel or something

Do it in your house then. Take the windows out first, don't be a prat and try and drive your car into your house - you're bound to upset someone.
