Of course the richer nations put more money into the EU..that's the whole point of sharing wealth!

If everyone regardless of wealth had to contribute the same, that'd be unfair (poll tax anyone?)

Point is Richie why should we suddenly start supporting Poland (and any others) just because they are now designated in the EU. There are lots of countries out there far worse off than Poland who we are not helping, meanwhile we have a growing national debt.

I just feel that the EU should not have its own money, each country to its own, especially with the stupid decisions they keep making and money they keep wasting (eg one minute paying farmers to produce stuff then next minute paying them not to produce it)

The point is, we're trying to UNITE europe and why shouldn't we help poorer nations?

each to their own? OK, let's not bother sending aid to africa to help starving millions? or war torn countries? nah, it's their problem! Sod em!

When I said 'each to their own' or whatever I was referring to the EC countries, which are all well above average development wise on a worldwide scale. Sorry if that wasn't clear (if it makes a difference!)

To the first point I've no problem with helping poorer nations, BUT why help Poland (a developed nation) rather than say Ethiopia, where people are starving?

Poland isn't really being given much help, quite a big misconception. The 40million for the border centre was a total waste of money in most people's eyes! I guess we are just trying to get a nice group of friends together to become stronger.

I know you have fairly much explained what you meant but to anybody who says "Why help Poland?", I would like you to ask my Grandfather the same question. Yes, he helped the war effort, he didn't need to, was in Canada and could have been fine but like many, many other Poles, came over here to work for us to fight the war. THat needs to be repaid and no amount of money will ever cover anybody's help when it came down to WW2 - not even the USA who we must be grateful to for their help.

I am a schizophrenic currently so please bear with me whilst I try to get rid of the 40+ personality.

I am not talking about immediate expenditure I mean the subsidies etc that will go to the poorer nations eg the farmers.

As for the war, I think you'll find we were fighting on behalf of Poland, Belgium etc from the moment Hitler invaded (which we didn't have to do). Yes the Poles joined in the effort as did the Belgians and the French and others rather than stay put and help the Nazis. The war was all about liberating such countries as Poland from 'evil' so the Poles were fighting for themselves not for us (not that that is in any way wrong or selfish!) Simplified view I know, but there you go. Even if you accept that Poland deserves our help now, still why more so than far poorer countries like Ethiopia and dozens of others. Sorry for waffling.
