OK, so I've bought the OH a new panda but she's got ideas about keeping her old car for the eldest when/if he passes his test.
Even then, getting the car is conditional on him saving enough cash for the insurance. (just to encourage him to get a job instead of sitting on Xbox all day and night playing call of war or some stupid, mind-numbing game).

Meanwhile, we need to lay the car up. It'll be on the drive with various bits disabled to prevent theft but we would like some insurance, bit of TPFT.
Strange that we have yet to find a company interested.
OH has sorted insurance on the panda, fully comp with 4 years NCD but insurance say she cannot also have 4 years on the laid up car & nor can she have TPFT - it has to be fully comp!
Anyone any experience of laying a car up for a while?

I don't see why you need TPFT on a car kept on private land that won't be driven. I have been in this situation when restoring cars and just insure for damage - which covers fire, theft, vandalism, falling trees etc. That doesn't cover for road use and the question of no claims reduction doesn't apply.

I use Brentacre. They are used to unusual motor insurance requirements and, because they do home and property insurance as well, can normally find a solution to this sort of problem.

You have earned your no claims on one car. If you wish to insure a second car, you have to build up the no claims on that separately.

The chances of damage/theft are in direct proportion to the value of the car. At the moment, it is worth £3k so within seconds of the insurance running out something is bound to happen.
Regarding the no claims, I cannot see why they can't offer a reasonable discount (2nd car) when it is money for old rope - the car will not be on the road so therefore the likelyhood of anything happening to it is extremely slim. In any case, I am down to pay maximum excess should I put in a claim - which reduces the chances of them paying out even further - and if they should have to pay out, their payment will be considerably reduced.

BTW, thanks for the heads up on Brentacre.

quite a few companies will 'mirror' your no clams onto a second car, but the cover has to be exactly the same. Have you had a search on comparison websites? Just see how cheap you can find TPFT with no no claims.

Adrian flux did me some cover - normally, cars have to be garaged but he agreed to wheels off, on axle stands with locking nuts so wheels can't be put on. Plus I'm bolting a metal bollard to the driveway and I'll be using a steering wheel clamp thingy that I had hanging around.
The policy is for accidental damage plus TPFT.
Seemingly it is quite common for people to want to lay a car up.

How confuzzling. My Flux policy for the Brava isn't actually 'laid-up' as I have 1500 miles a year in case I need to use it (as it turned out I did last year), for the first year it mirrored my other policy's NCB but now has its own. As it's limited mileage, they made no demands on where/ how it was kept although it is in a secure garage in a secure compound :) Cheap and cheerful.
