hello

i recently bought a five door 2000 fiat punto, and just set about upgrading the head unit and door speakers. i fitted the new headunit, a Sony CDX-GT44IP and ran it on the factory speakers with no problem for a few days.

i then installed a pair of JBL GTO-6537, which worked at first. now however, whenever i turn the headunit on, a horrible high pitched squeal type noise comes pretty loudly from the door speakers, and the headunit reads 'failure'.

i decided i must have done something wrong, so firstly tested the speakers with the old headunit, same problem. i then took the door speakers out and did nothing more than take the wires off, then push them back on. after doing so, everything worked again.

now i just jumped in the car, turned the headunit on and everything was still working. so i shut the drivers side door, and once again the high pitched noise came back the moment the door closed. whats confusing is that the issue can be fixed temporaily. even when it was working though, i could hardly put the volume above 20 without getting a popping/cracking noise from the speakers.

any help would be fantastic!

It sounds like you have a trapped cable. If one of the speaker wires is under pressure then it will have some funny effects. As it happens as you shut the door i would check there. Try leaving the doorcard off a day and see if it helps. If it does then its just a matter of finding out which cable you have disturbed and moving it to a better location.

great thank you for the advice. i have just been out, and indeed after moving some cabling everything returned to normal. i will remove the door card soon too just to make sure everything is secure :)

thanks! i just have one more question. now everythings back in place, after a certain point the speakers begin to pop at different times. it seems to occur randomly, but is guaranteed to happen at some point. it's strange as the speakers don't seem to screw the sound up at all, it's very good quality yet interrupted quiet often by a popping sound.

is there anything im missing that may hinder the sound, such as wiring/fuses etc?

ok cool, think ill pop the door panels off tomorrow and have a look. out of curiosity is there a chance a wire could be trapped/shorting behind the headunit?

ok cool. i noticed when replacing the headunit there were plenty of wires back there and it seems the most obvious place for a problem. best thing to electrical tape anything that could be causing a problem?

with the door speakers, i cant see any potential problem except maybe where the wire connects to the speakers. the connectors are open and can move about/wiggle pretty easily. is it a good idea to lock them down using some electrical tape? i noticed previously the wires where connected to the factory speakers in a small yellow case, presumably to stop any movement?

well i just pulled the headunit out and examined the wiring, its shot to sh*t haha. one or two very dodgy solderings that (minus a thread or two) are not touching the wires. the answer to my problems i think...

about to pull out the soldering gun and start putting it right haha :slayer:
