Hiya all

Just bought a silver 2000 sporting 1.2 16v and having sorted ICE out in my now dead Astra i seem to be having difficulty in installing my amp/Sub and even front and rear speakers in me new purchase.

I have checked my handy Manufacturers Stereo instructions and on the basis of this bought some Vibe 165mm (6.5" by my conversion) for the front doors
There are only three screw holes on the pony ones that are in it not the four that the Vibe come with.
And the vibes are about 1/2 to 1cm too big to fit the bloomin speaker hole let alone allow me to screw the things in!

i can't seem to find where the hole from drivers side under the bonnet feeds into the car (there are two tubes/pipes so presumably I follow this?)
I've poked my old grounding lead through the hole under the bonnet (so as not to do any damage should it hit summat that could damage) on the drivers side expecting the lead to drop through to the drivers footwell (like my Astra)- about three foot of it went in but it never arrives in the foot well!

I'm totally new to this Punto malarky and the speakers on the rear have funny plastic yellow clips on them that don't wanna come off. i can't even see where they are screwed in
I wanna replace these speakers as well as they are quite frankly rubbish but don't wanna be chopping leads on the off chance of what I'm doing is right

About to buy a Clarion head unit (or possibly an Alpine) as I want the joys of CD and MP3 but fear that fitting it might cause as many problems as this has so far. (and it seems this would be the best starting point before fitting everything else)

I can get on on the net for about 200 (my max) but then I've gotta fit it. If i get it from Halfords or somewhere they will fit it but i'll be spending more like 300 on it to get this free fitting

My car has come with a manufacturers "sub woofer" - a whopping 100w - my ass - which i plan to disconnect and replace with my own Vibe that has built in amp, and remove the crap one if poss but i wanna keep the auto changer it came with.

Getting totally frustrated with the whole thing and unless I pay someone to do it (at about 50 quid per item installed it would seem) that'll cost prob as much as the system itself!!

Can anyone offer any light on how to get the wires from the battery down into the car and thru to the boot?
the rest i can do by upping the interior door trim down the length of the car, hiding the wires as I did on my Astra presumably and screwing them back down to leave the wires poking into the boot.

Any help on all this component speakers business, presumably they are best?
I didn't even know you could get them. The last I heard 3way 6x9s were the business!
the doors do the Bass/mid and the tweeters in the dash do their tweetery business. However the units on the dash seem totally enclosed and I don't know how to get at them
And my Vibes don't fit the doors!! (ebay selling here we come)

What size do i need for the doors as the manufacturers book seems to lie to me and do i need special ones to fit the handy three screw hole fixings?
The cardboard faced speakers in it at the moment need to go - very soon!!

I realise this is a lot to ask but I'm really struggling. i've trawled the internet, read loads of threads (this being my first hit in fact which I've found to be the most enlightneing) and picked up a lot from it

However it seems you guys are open to questions as is my DJing board is so i'm hoping you can asist.
i love me new car but the system in it is less than shoddy!

Would a haynes manual help here? but i've bought them in the past and they tend to tell you everything apart from what you want to know and my local halfords they are all sealed so I can't even see in it before I buy it. Not sure if they cover the ICE either

Old cars were a doddle to fit, these new ones I'm very much a newbie!!! I'm not used to dealing with build quality!

Any feedback or links on ICE install is greatly appreciated -
even a swift booga off is welcomed at this stage as at least its progress!!!

I need to connect a Vibe sub with built in Amp, door speakers and replace the front (tweeters on windscreen down post thing) and rear speakers (are these 4"?)

Any recommendations on decent sound would be useful - been looking at infinity speakers for the front as they seem to be priced at the higher end of things with the likes of Alpine etc. but never heard them so don't know if they're any cop

I just want to know what I buy will fit as the Punto seems to me to be very complicated!!

There are no guides on the net i can find (I've been looking on and off for the past three days, for what should be a relatively easy task! but i admit I'm stumped.
Sorry to ramble but when i get asked stuff on my forum its always handy to have as much info as poss
Cheers
M :)

Welcome the forum m8,,

monster post for ur first lol..

you normally have to buy special adaptors which go between the speaker and the door fitment for the speaker.. theres a start lol.

Your new front speakers will be deeper than standard ones likely, try removing whatever is behind the ols speakers to get room. if they are components then mount the tweeter elsewhere or justy leave it as it is.

These yellow clips are made so they fit neatly and quickly in the factory, just snip the wires off at the clips and bin the old speakers.

**** happens!

right, where to start...

The front door speakers are 16.5cm, but ur speakers are too deep for the hole. My mate had the same problem and he cut a hole in the grill covering the existing speakers and bolted the new speakers over it, with the new (pioneer) grill to cover the speakers. I dont like the way that it isnt flush with the door, but it solved the problem. As for the yellow connectors, i just cut them off and connected up the new speakers.

For the tweeters in the pillar, just remove the plastic cover by unscrewing the screw behind the smaller cover at the bottom, and if uve got manual adjusting mirrors, pull the rubber boot off the adjusting handle, which will reveal a nut that needs to be unscrewed. After that ul need to pull it pretty hard for it to come off (it will probably feel as tho ur gonna break it but it wont!) You will see the tweeter in its housing behind it now.

For the rear 10cm speakers, i wouldnt bother getting new ones- i did and couldnt tell the difference. Just disconnect, bin them and buy some 6x9's and put on the parcel shelf.

To get the power lead to the battery, theres a gromit on the passenger side of the bulkhead- ul be able to see it and this comes out behind the glove box, but u can still get to it without removing the box.

To get all the leads to the back of the car(phono, remote.power), go under the passenger door sill (2 bolts at either end and pull) There are wires there already put them next to those. Next put them up through another plastic bit (i dont know what it is, its just there!) then under the seats to the boot. Tape all the leads together so they all get threaded up and u dont have to do it for each one.

Headunit- remove the old s**tter by getting 4 long coctail sticks, put em in the holes and pull. Take the aerial out and the other plugs. These plugs should fit straight into the new headunit's plugs. Oh and ul need a bit of dashoboard to fill in the gap - tenner from halfords.

If ive missed anything out,ask again, dont mind......glad to help

Well thats all bloomin marvellous!!!
Cheers guys

As for the incorrect spellin of "Norfampton", thats how we talk like, innit?!!! Or thats what I get told anyway!
:D

wolfracepunto - my word i'm kinda liking tha Black Beauty pics on yoru posts - I thought my silvery one looked nice but that black action works for me.
Thanks for all that - i feel much more confident now i know where to start!

I even went into Halfords last night to see if they could help with the door problem - they couldn't even tell me the size of the speakers in the front. In fact the boy/guy/whatever it was according to him and his handy folder of Audio Excellence hidden under his magic desk (labelled with the best quality Biro he could find), the Punto doesn't have front speakers!! nice work numpty boy. The ones I have might be rubbish but they are definitely there!

As for the fascia these appear to be freely avail on the net and at halfords too so thats not a prob. I've had to re-wire headunits before which is usually a big old nightmare! Clips don't fit from the old to new, pliers crimps and hundreds of coloured wires that don't match!! Hopefully you'll be right and a new one will plug straight in

All excellent advice and I think I might be hanging around on here for a bit now. Seems I could learn a lot (not difficult when you know FA)
I never claimed to be a boy racer and I'm not that fussed about massive bumpers but the stereo is a must.

Thanking you all and hoping you all have a lovely day!!
You've started mine off as well as I could have hoped for! Pity I have a meeting in Southampton this afternoon, but it started well!
Ta ta for now
