Hi Guys need a little help, I recently bought a 1.9 Turbo Punto Multijet. It has been fine until last night. At first it popped up saying check rear lights so I pulled over and they were fine, turned the engine off and the warning had gone. Then I continued with my journey and then it popped up saying ABS couldn’t be used as there was a error and also warning light came up saying traction control had been turned off due to a error. I again turned the car off waited 2 minutes and re-started the car and all the warnings had gone and the car felt fine.

Anyone help with this issue.

Thanks
Billy

Try disconnecting the batttery for an hour to reset the ECU,maybe old stored fault codes.
Does the car startok/..a failing battery can throw up problems.
The rear lght is something I have had on a friendsGP..check the connections..mine was covered in fuzz..

The car struggles to start sometimes when it is cold, takes a few turns to male it start up. I’m a big noob when it comes to cars. Where would I find the ECU box?

if you were to disconnect the battery that in itself resets the ECU.

Sounds like your batteries struggling tbh..I would go get it tested at somewhere like HALFORDS. Its a free test that checks the battery and alternator.

Where you get your battery from is up to you .Only thing I'd recommend is get the best quality you can afford with a 3/4 year warrenty.

I use Euro Car Parts on the internet. They often have 'sales'on and you can save a good amount. Plus if you have problems with it they will sort under warrenty.
Just put your reg in,on the site and take your pick.

I agree it sounds like a weak batterry. They cause all sorts of weird electrical faults.
When starting the car, do you wait until the preheat light (Yellow shapes like a coil or spring) goes out before turning from on to start? This is important on diesels especially in cold weather.

Yeah mate, I always make sure that the glow plugs are ready to go before starting the car. I will check on Euro Car Parts now for a new battery if you guys think this is the issue. Thanks for the help

sorry Guys, this is not necessary an indication of a weak battery but more likely one or more bad glow-plug(s). The other symptoms ring the grounding-issue bell, or bad connection, moisture, rust etc @ the distribution box ...

I’ll check all this before getting a new battery then mate, was just about to order one now until I seen this response. Should I just open the ECU and check for any water or loose connections?

The ECU is sealed..leave it alone..check away, the battery test is free at Halfords.Thats where Id start anyway..free test I mean

You definitely DON'T want to open the ECU !!

What I'm talking about is the distribution (or repartition) box which is located next to the battery in the engine bay, this one can be subject to water projection / moisture and create various intermittent apparently un-related electrical malfunction. Most of the electrical connections are at the bottom.

To check the glow plugs You'll need an ohm-meter.

OF COURSE, before any investigation You need to be sure that the basics are good: battery and charging circuit, I didn't mention that because its almost as obvious as getting fuel in the tank to run the car … ;-)
