Hi guys,

Last night my car gave up in rush hour traffic. The engine was still running but the transmission light and engine light came on and "check transmission" and "check engine" warnings on the dash.

RAC recovered me home and provided a readout of Fault codes. My initial reaction was "I need to replace he gearbox" and my car is a Dialogic so that will likely be stupidly expensive.

I was hoping someone with an experienced eye could take a look over these fault codes and either explain them a bit easier or give me an idea on where to start with repairs.

Thank you in advance!

Seems the dualogic controller misses informations from the engine control unit and therefore stopped working. It needs to know a bunch of things to actuate/release the clutch and select the right gear; Accelerator position, delivered engine torque, brake pedal, current speed, etc.

The best I can suggest is to get a MES hooked to your car with the correct adapter and from there you'll be able to narrow down the initial fault…

Definitely a good plan to get MultiECUScan on it, but may also be a good idea to check for loose connectors and water in the fusebox.
It's unlikely all of those components have gone faulty in a fairly short space of time.
That's not saying there's not a component problem too, but pretty much every time I have seen a laundry list of faults like that, the main problem has been a loose connector.

Not wishing to intrude on the Punto section, as a Qubo owner. Have a look on our section, Re Brake Light Switch Failure..........a few of us have had this issue, the symptoms you report are spot on for it..............the ECU gets F''ked' by incorrect signals, new switch and problems go away. Here's hoping..........

You guys are the best! My gut instinct has been electricals. MES will be my next stop. Can anyone recommend an adapter to buy?

Grande earth cables have been known to corrode internally too, so check the connection points initially and if they seem good try running a jumplead from battery to gearbox, and gearbox to chassis.

Gendan do package bundles with full MES and the appropriate cables for your vehicle :)

100% agree ! Buy from them, maybe a bit more expensive but the kit WILL work ok ...

I have spent the past 24 hours or so researching and like Qube O said, this appears to be a dualogic fault across the Fiat range. It is also the cheapest fix so I will start here. The only issue is that I can't find decent information anywhere online as to where the Brake Light Switch is in the GP. I have gotten down into the drivers footwell, removed the blower pipe and had look but it very tight under there and I can't make sense of what I am seeing. I have attached an image so if anyone experienced could point me in the right direction I would be massively grateful.

Cheers!

No idea where it is on the Punto, on the Qubo its a swine to change, the new one goes in fairly easy, but getting the old one out..............took two of us, one holding down the brake pedal to take the pressure off the switch, a few scrapped knuckles and a lot of rude words. Have fun, hope it works out.
Cheers Qube O.

It's probably hidden in the pedal support and quite difficult to remove unless one know how to, which I don't … Maybe simpler to remove the whole block (or at least loosen it) so you can better see how it's fitted ?
Couldn't find much in eLearn & ePer but here's how it looks.

So after I removed some cowling to get a better view, I found the switch and removed it. Nice and easy and it popped right out.

Went to ECP and bought an identical switch.

Now for the absolute ****ing life of me, I cannot get either switch back in! Both switches are identical. there's no threading or obvious way to stick it back in and secure it in.

I can't believe that so many people for so many years have had such a common problem and no one at all has thought to take pictures or make a video on how to do it!

I'm about ready to weight this sack of **** car in for scrap

I wonder from your photos whether it might be one of those fittings where the red clip pulls out i.e. to the right on your picture allowing enough movement to get the switch in place, then push the red bit back down. I might well be wrong - just an educated guess

Thank you DGPunto. I tried for around 2 hours and gave up in frustration. My better half managed to convince a local auto electrician to come out and he was stumped too. He eventually held it in place with cable ties and we now have brake lights!

A turn of the key and the car started first time! (It hadn't done before the the old switch was removed)

And then after about 2 minutes of idling it stalled and cut out and refused to start again. The transmission light has started flashing again and the engine light is on. He even scanned it for me and it threw up a bunch of codes but he didn't make note of them and just said various faults relating to transmission, CAN etc (he was giving his time for free)

I think at this point there is no other avenue other than a specialist garage for diagnosis :(
