If I send the V5 away now, how does that work? Before I sell my car? Would his insurance cover it in the garage?

You'll need to check with his insurance company, you'll also need to re-register is as a PLG vehicle and pay for the RFL as you won't be eligible for it to be left as 'disabled'.

How do you do that? I thought sending the V5 away would sort of get the ball rolling on these things automatically?

EDIT: It isn't a motability car, he had the car well before he could qualify for the free road tax.

You'll need to send another form with V5 to change the 'taxation class' of the car. Easy enough to do, a quick search and download off of the DVLA website should to you (y)

As the car is a gift and your grandfather is still alive (the change of owner on the V5 predates the death certificate) if you were to sell the car you will not have to pay any inheritance tax after the sale.

Not convinced about that. The gift [although still unsure of the value, it may be under £3k and falls within the 'annual exemption' rules] will be classed as a PET [potentially exempt transfer] and only fully falls out of the estate once 7 years have passed. The legislation is in place to stop people giving away all of their assets - they still come into it for IHT purposes.

Sorry to hear that. When I was a child my parents always used to say that the older generation have to go to make space for the next one. I still find comfort in that.

You had the evident privilege of being his grandson. Try to take pride and comfort in that. Sincere condolences, S
