Hi all,

Whilst I was driving on Saturday, I applied the brakes as the vehicles in front were slowing down; however, my car refused to stop and you could feel that the gearbox was still engaged in a high gear and refused to change down through the gears. As the car was not braking as efficiently, due to the failure of the gearbox, I was forced to jam the brakes on at their maximum, at which point the car lost all power and the gearbox switched to neutral. A message on the dashboard appeared stating that there had been transmission failure. There was a constant beeping to signal that the gearbox had experienced an issue. The car had to be recovered to my home many hours later.

We have since tried starting the car but the gearbox remains permanently engaged in neutral. We have had intermittent problems with the gearbox since we bought the car which have resolved themselves, but it seems to have failed completely this time. You guys will be a lot more knowledgeable than myself on this issue and wondered if you could provide me with any advice on how to proceed from here?

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Hi Matt,

sorry to hear it's failed..,
so basically the car didn't disengage drive when you braked.. then reverted to Neutral when the brakes essentially stopped the car.

sounds like you MAY have a fault with the sensing of brake application..do the brakelights actualy come on ?

your g-box is essentially a manual - that is controlled by an ECU and drives hydralics to change gear + work the clutch, etc.

this ECU will store Fault codes- the same as the Engine / or Airbag..,

in your position I would;
1, start engine test function of brake lights,

2, try and get fault codes read,
if you haven't got the gear for this - try disconnecting the battery overnight.. then reconnect and try again you never know..!! does work with SOME glitches..,

fialing that try and locate a FIAT / aLFA specilaist = INDY in your area, as they will be experts in the workings of you semi-auto box, AND have the correct gear to read fault codes.. ONLY changing the parts needed.. unlike some garages,

good luck, and keep us informed,

Charlie - Oxford

Ta Andy :)

My money is on loss of hydraulic pressure, which ment car couldn't engage clutch to change gear, and no won't select gear (lucky it didn't get stuck in gear).

This will be caused by one of 3 things which Should be looked at in turn.

1. pump - does it start up when the drivers door is opened? If not here's where to start looking, check it's getting a power feed.

2. Loss of CS Speed fluid which is the hydraulic fluid the gearbox uses. Not sure of the setup on your car, but the reservoir will either be on the top of the gearbox or I suspect more likly on the front between the gearbox and radiator, behind a splash guard which will need to be removed to gain access. Might be worth poking your head under the car to see for any signs of oil leaking.

3. Failed accumulator, if the above are fine then this could be causing the system not to pressurise.

I hope this helps with giving you somewhere to start. Keep us up to date with how it goes :)

Did you finally work out what was wrong with the gearbox? Interested to know if it was the actuator.
