Hi,

My heater fan works on settings 1-3, but not on the maximum setting of 4. Is this likely to be a fault with the resistor, or the switch?

I have a 2006 fiat go 1.2 active without air con.

Thanks in advance for any advice offered,

Ewan

More than likely the resistor, they are about £20 - £30.
Maybe give it a try?
Do you know someone with a grande punto? Or a punto mk2b or stilo? Pretty sure they are all the same resistor.

It will be the resistor mate if you look under your glove box you will see two wiring looms, one with two wires and one with five wires the loom with the five wires is where the problem lies. Later to day when it is light again disconnect the five wire connector from the resistor and have a look at the connector block, more than likely the fourth pin in will look a little nasty and be melted somewhat. You can as a temporary fix do what I did and clean the connector block and resistor pins with some emery paper and plug it back in and it will more than likely work for a short while. You are best off replacing them both together mate. The resistor may or may not be held in with a screw. Mine wasn't and the only way I could get it out was to use force with a flat headed screwdriver.

For a permanent fix it is going to cost you around £50.00 and about 30 mins of your time together with a crimping set and/or soldering iron. Crimping and electrical tape will do the same job mate tbh.

I know this as I did this job on Friday on my GP.

These are the parts you will need

Connector and replacement wiring:

Thanks for your help. This was the cause of the problem. I have cleaned the terminal and is now working again but I have ordered a replacement.

Thanks again,

Ewan

Just bumping this. Around 6 months ago I had the issue with my heater not working on any setting. This was resolved by replacing the resistor. This morning I found that again, the heater doesn't work on any setting. It could just be (I guess) that the resistor was initially at fault, and now I will have the melted 4th pin? Will I need to replace the resistor again?

Didn't have time this morning, but I'll know more when I take it apart and inspect.

Resistor, wiring loom, fan unit, connectors all weak links in this area.

Resistor especially!

I've replaced the loom once, and am now on my 3rd resistor which has just failed. Have a new resistor and loom to fit at the weekend (just in case my first attempt was shoddy) - do you reckon it's worth getting a new fan unit too? The cold/wet weather is coming in fast, and I can only demist my windscreen on the 4th setting (which is better than nothing I suppose)

Hi!
As you may have already guessed, the resistor is cooled by the air flow, if the flow is obstructed in any way, ie. the fan drum is full of leaves (mine was full of oak leaves) or the dust filter is clogged, the cooling may not be enough and the overtemperature fuse opens, therefore the fan motor only runs on step 4.

How did you get on in the end with the job matey

Thanks for asking! It's working well again. I fitted the new loom with some better quality connector blocks, and so far so good. I've had other electrical issues which may have been related, but have since cleaned up and copper greased all the earth points in the engine bay.

Need to fit a new MAP sensor and cooland temp sensor tomorrow and hopefully the old girl's running well again :)

Glad you got it sorted. Which route did you adopt for splicing wire together - crimp connector or soldering? Did you buy your parts via ebay as given in the links above? If so would appreciate if you can post links to them would be great. I hope the other jobs go well good luck.

I just used connector blocks like below:

Insulating tape round each individual block once the connection is made:

And a kit like this:

Glad you got it sorted. Can I ask

1) What AMP block size connectors did you order.

2) I've had a look at my wiring it all seems ok, but might aswell get a back up wir8ng harness. On mine it has 4 wires (see pic) but the eBay listing it has 5 and also random colours, not your usual live, ground earth setup - how did you know which wires to connect to each other?

Thanks.20191010_142523.jpeg20191010_142515.jpeg20191010_142531.jpeg
