Could it be something to do with the air pressure sensor that's like the only thing other then a few sensors I have not changed

Have you checked the guides on cleaning your earthing points? Failing that I'd start thinking towards battery (get a battery test) then fuel filter (They're expensive on this car :'(). When was it changed do you know?

Mine seems to be having this issue just not as regular as yours and I'm going to do the Fuel filter as part of the regular servicing anyway so I'll see if it fires better. It seemed to happen more often when I put some 'cheap' diesel in a friend had lying round which may have had a bit of moisture in.

does it turn over ok but just seem to struggle to fire? i had this problem on mine and turned out to be a faulty crank shaft sensor which isn't the cheapeast of jobs unfortunately. Cambelt and water pump off to get to it so had them changed at the same time.

Mine still has a small starting issue but previous owner had a new battery which is far smaller than it should be so not getting the cranking power needed to spin the starter motor sufficiently.

Yeah its had
2 sets of glow plugs
New glow plug relay
new battery
Cleaned egr
New fuel filter
New cold start senor
Just had cam belt and water pump done
Oil filter
Air filter
Some really good and may i add expensive engine clean £21 for 300 ml

So next in line to get done is new cam sensor and air mass sensor
But its going to have to wait until I get some money together now
Anyone with the answer would save me alot and I would be for every thankful

Evening

Thought I'd drop in a note about the issues I had with my 1.9 multijet sporting.

From when I got in in October 2010 until getting shot of it in March this year I had continual starting problems with it and an occasional random misfire at about 3000 rpm normally when the engine was cold. The glow plug and relay were replaced before I got it.

The starting problems wouldn't happen every time but when they did engine would turn over multiple times without firing and eventually start with a plume of white smoke out the back which I'm sure was unburnt fuel.

Had it at fiat garage, said nothing wrong. Indy fiat specialist, replaced 2 fuel injectors which didn't help. At a totally indy garage to scan for fault codes over the 2 years but nothing ever showed so lived with it as couldn't find faulty part. The problem never showed when the car was at the garages.

In Feb this year it had a total loss of power when accelerating, again no fault codes but indy garage pulled the EGR valve out and found the solenoid wasn't moving. The EGR valve was replaced, but the car started having stating problems all the time and misfire at 3000 rpm all the time. They diagnosed Mass Airflow Sensor Fault. Garage diagnosed this by unplugging the sensor which put the car to default settings and cured the misfire and starting problems. It did put the engine management light on though. The garage said that unplugging this puts other modules into a safe mode and fiat won’t tell then what so could there be other issues. However I ran the car with the sensor unplugged while waiting for a replacement sensor and never had the starting problems. I didn’t keep the car long enough to see if the repair resolved the issue.

I'm no way mechanically minded but my guess is Mass Airflow Sensor fault had been there for the last 2 and a bit years sending bad info to the ECU causing EGR value to work overtime opening and closing to sort things out, eventually causing it to fail.

I’m annoyed the engine diagnostics never showed the Mass Airflow Sensor fault because diagnostics spent 2 years telling me blue and me wasn't working (Could figure that out for myself because it didn't work when I pressed the buttons) but couldn't find a fault in the engine. Even when the EGR valve was known to be totally gubbed the diagnostics showed it was working normally.

To sum up worse car I've owned, the above weren't the only faults

Hope the helps someone though

This morning was cold when I went to start the car after sitting overnight in 2 degrees weather. The display read normal when switched on waiting for the glow light to go out. Only when I keyed start did the warning for engine over temp warning come up, clearly engine stone cold! Points to low battery volts or poor earthing causing volt drop to this one sensor. No MSG once engine started. Once batt charged during the drive to work msg stayed away. Will monitor and change batt if necessary in a while.

hi i have a fiat punto, for afew days now my car seems to be struggling to get power. it wont go above 40mph and struggles to go up hills, then all of a sudden its like i feel a relase of the accelarator pedal and it goes fine again. however maybe half an hour later it struggles again and i have to lower gears and it struggles to gain speed. this used to happen very random for short time, now its every day for longer.

Is this a diesel? sounds very likely to be a clogged EGR valve, this is what mine felt like to begin with until it seized entirely and wouldn't even run. (just realised the post is quite old so you may have already solved the problem?

Just thought I'd mention I had a very similar problem to this and it turned out to be a dodgy earth (surprise surprise with it being Italian)! In the engine bay on the OS there is an earthing point just above and behind the ECU. Remove it and clean it up - hopefully it will solve your issues, it did mine and it starts up perfect everytime!

Checked battery voltage during starting the 2007 GP 1.3 JTD this afternoon. Was 7.7 volts during cranking. Batt read 12.6 volts before cranking, dropped to 11.8 volts with just ignition key on, and fuel pump, glo plugs going. Time for a new battery? Btw all earths have no corrosion. Thanks Dom

I've seen another thread on here somewhere about they had get valves and relays and battery's etc done numerous times and the problem persisted but last I saw he changed his glow plugs to fiat Bosch glow plugs and apparently these are the only ones that work but they're like 62 quid if I remember rightly, mine has same problem but not too bad yet (touch wood) if mine gets worse and closer to time of my car needing service I'm goin to change to these plugs as my FIRST solution to the problem hope this helps

Did earth cable voltage drop test, 0.34v so ok there. Battery 7 years old, cranking slower ea day. New 60a-hr battery ordered. So will update when installed. Also The Green Sparkplug Company UK sold me 4 Bosch glo plugs for $75 delivered to Australia. They work fine.

Varta 60Ahr battery in and cranking far faster, will see if high temp warning when starting stone cold has gone.
BTW, used a jump starter pack across the battery lead and block to keep voltage on while I changed batteries. Worked like a charm.
Old battery was 7 yo, can't complain.

Starter motor! my mk2.5 1.3MJ was doing this... I suggest taking the starter off and bench testing it or swapping it with a known good. Mine started fine from cold but as soon as it got warm if you turned it off then restarted it would either click or turn over then just stop...

Success! Starts like a dream with the new battery. Thanks for all the suggestions! Nice to know that it is fixed. DomSing.

Hi Everyone,

I have been reading through this post as I have similar symptoms on my 57 1.9 mjet. Over the last few years it has been intermittent to start. Some days it would be fine and others it would just not want to start until the 2nd/3rd time.

Yesterday it finally gave up and I have now flattened the battery trying to start it. I am going to borrow some jump leads and see how it behaves while jumped.

Did the poster manage to resolve their issues in the end as the last post from DomSing is that a battery resolved the problem.

Regards
Lee

DomSing says new battery cured all gremlins on my GP 1.3JTD, blown bulbs, airbag & engine overtemp msgs gone. Seems the old battery was too worn out. BTW starts immediately, no cranking past 1-2 secs, glo plugs heat up quick.
