Hi guys, for those who saw my last post about intermittent timing sensor fault I have had fiat look at it and have been told it is not as straight forward as first thought!

They have said that to get at the cam sensor the whole cam system needs to be removed which would mean removing and refitting the belt which may cause it to stretch which could cause it to go later on so they recommended I have the cam belt changed at the same time even though its only done 40k!

And instead of just having the sensor to pay for (£72) plus labour and vat it will now turn in to a couple of hour job costing atleast £500 for labour fitting new cam sensor and belt if I choose to do what they say.

Has anyone had cam sensor removed and found an easier way or had a non fiat garage work on it as I don't want to pay out £500 :(

Thanks guys.

Sensor is behind camshaft, garage is correct in what they say. Good practice to change belt and water pump at this time.

Doesn't the 1.9 Mjet cam sensor just screw in from behind the sprocket?

Or is it a sprocket off job like the original JTD?
.

This is definitely the case, ive just had this done myself. Had a serious starting problem and was found to be the cam shaft sensor (phase sensor is what FIAT call it). This was done by my local garage as FIAT wanted £700
Parts: Cam shaft sensor, cambelt kit, water pump.

Hi guys sorry its a very late reply its been crazy.

Well first of all. yes i went ahead and the final job with cam/water pump, cam sensor & labour all £350 + vat. which for that work i thought was ok.

BUT once i got the car back it was even worse and the car would barley start, they told me the cam sensor they put in must be faulty, few days later i had another one fitted, this was alot better and the guy in the dealership still said its better but not perfect.

i used the car for a week and thought it is so rough starting and in a week it didnt start twise and as i have had to spend £350 on it i cant leave it with this problem.

i then took it in 2 weeks ago on friday and i still do not have it back, they say they have opened a Technical case with fiat on the car and that a technician will be coming next week to see it but they dont know whats up with it?

so i am stuck with no car for yet another week and no progress? i am realy not happy with fiat realy as they have no clue what to do with their own car.

Thats the update anyway guys sorry its late.

im not sure? they thought it was a simple plug out plug in 20 min job but then they rang me and said its behind the camshaft so will be a big job and more ££££ :/

Can I just say it's NOT fiat your unhappy with it's the franchised dealer you've took it too. When they get stuck they then have direct access to FIAT themselves to try and rectify the fault which from what you say is what they've had to do.
