hi all, I need advice/ your opinions on something. My (ex) other half bought a 56 plate punto 8 months back on finance with 70000 miles on it and has had nothing but problems with the gearbox. The dealer has fitted 3 'reconditioned' gearboxes in this time and she has paid for a new clutch. They are now refusing to fit another as it has gone again. She is not a poor driver and doesn't crunch gears and goes back down thru the gears one at a time as the dealer suggested to her. Is it a common problem or is there an underlying fault somewhere? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.....Lou

Some 1.2's are fitted with 15 inch alloys but your bog standard just has 15 inch steelies which is what mine is.

I'm on my 2nd gearbox. First one failed on main input shaft so that was replaced with all bearings and seals replaced. 2000 miles later the car starting popping out of gear. Had the box replaced by our mechanic with a one from a breakers on ebay much cheaper than fiat, although you are taking a risk.

Some people say the 1.2's are ok for gearboxes but I disagree, hope you get it sorted !

I can give u picture if u like I can't think what model it was its Some soppy special edition one wth an Italian name obviously think it might be avant-garde or something not sure. just dunno how she's gone thru 2 n now a 3rd gearbox surely there must be an underlying problem.....

My 1.2 rides lovely. Only quibble I have with the gearbox is sometimes it struggles to slip into reverse. But I release the clutch and push it back down again and it goes in no problem. And my 64/65 horses are very well behaved and do what I tell them to do. So there's nothing wrong with a 1.2 :bang: people don't half slate the active on here (n)

Im Not slating, I owned a mk2 1.2 for 3 years, it also had about4 gearboxes.

I'm merely pointing out how ridiculous it is, that the gearbox can't handle the very low bhp output.

The fiat dealers simply say for the warranty that the car has been overrevved so many times so will not replace as this is wear and tear.
You kinda have to rag the 1.2 to get it up to speed so overrevving could be the result of the box. But it is a bit ridiculous you would think they would put a reliable box in. Lucky I just got a 1.9 GP a totally different beast from the 1.2 (praying the gearbox wont blow)

Why would dealers say that, they want the work?

I think the 1.2 is a decent box, not the best but compared to so many other manufacturers certainly not the worse. Think how many have been fitted worldwide, you expect a small percentage of failure by law of probability.

OP brought car with 70k on it, who knows it's real history.

indeed she bought it when I wasn't with her which was her first mistake lol. always owned a ford or Peugeot diesel and never had a gearbox or clutch issue....ever! she's gonna have to bite the bullet and pay 400 quid for a new box and fitting by the looks of it....she doesn't over rev the car from when I've Been watching her drive n she doesn't have any nasty driving habits yet as she's only been driving just under a year! what a bad first car. oh well....

There will always be an element of luck when buying secondhand no matter how well you drive, key here is to buy a warranty.

I spent years at a few ford garages and gearbox/clutch issues were common, cant comment on pugs though.

Personally i would buy a secondhand box and aftermarket clutch and fit them, keeping costs right down.

How old is the car?

Peugeots are not immune to clutch issues. I have had a string of Peugeots. My 1998 406 1.8 blew its clutch into a million tiny pieces but that was fair enough because it was on 105k miles. Less impressive was my 2005 407 2.0hdi which needed a new clutch and flywheel just after a bought it at 40k miles and 18 months and another 50k miles later it began to slip again so I traded it in for the t-jet. Never heard of a pug gearbox failing (though it must happen).

I'd be nervous about fitting another new gearbox without having traced the cause of the failings incase the same thing happens again. I think I'd be tempted to fit the new box and trade it in, at least that way the next owner will be covered for a minimum of 3 months.

Is this over rev thing a con?

Reason I ask, I serviced my brother in laws 57 1.2 grande, he drives it like a granny, and previous owner was his mum who drove equally slow, I plugged in ecu scan to reset service counter, and found it had logged something like 5 over revs?

How can you over rev a car with a limiter?

Checked my 1.9 and 0 over revs

I find that an odd excuse. Even if it had logged a whole load of over-revs they would only be for tiny durations and I can't see them affecting the gearbox.

Perhaps over revs can be logged by changing down inappropriately. The rev limiter can only work by cutting the fuel/spark off, it can't mechanically brake the engine.
