Hi guys,
I'm new to the Fiat Forum so apologies if this has been brought up, I've looked through a good few of the previous posts looking for similar situations but have not found a solution to my various problems. I have an 07 Grande Punto 1.2 Dynamic.

For a while now my car has been making a loud whining noise accompanied with a burning rubber/plastic smell, it sounds like the noise the car makes when the revs are dying down if revved in neutral but louder. It seems to do this in the morning, or when driving at quite high revs (thats about 80-85 mph in my car). Usually when i turn the engine off and on everything is fine and it drives as normal. I've described this to various people but no one has a definite answer, Ive been told alternator, timing belt, other belts etc.

My second problem happened tonight when I was driving on the motorway doing about 60-70 mph the noise came back, the battery light came on, I checked under the bonnet no obvious problems so decided to keep travelling when I was parking the car I realised there was a loss of power steering basically the more I moved the steering wheel the less power I had. I tried the car again a while after no battery light on the dash and had all power steering back, after driving for 30 seconds the battery light appeared again and when stopping again I had loss of power steering but it works fine when driving normally

The garages where shut by the time I was home so decided to try on here to see if anyone can help me before I take it to a garage in the morning, i'm not sure if these problems are linked but any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

forgot to add my power steering light has not lit up on the dash only the battery light is on

Alternator bearings beginning to seize, at high revs they heat up from friction and expand partially seizing putting extra strain on the aux belt causing that to heat up (hence burning smells) the alternator slows down the output drops so the charging light comes on and the power steering looses power. Though you should have a steering warning light, which begs the question is the steering warning light working correctly

Thanks very much for the reply left it at the garage this morning he says one of the belts was done in and he would replace it and check the alternator and stuff well he was doing it so hopefully it's the end of the problem. Thanks again
