Car: 2006 Grande Punto 1.2 active.

Today I went off to pick up my girlfriend and upon arrival, when I was manoeuvring the car, the power steering failed. I restarted the car and it worked again but with a very distinct mechanical grinding noise. After starting the car again the power steering failed again. I have read in other threads that it could be a problem with the battery, alternator or steering column but no mention of any grinding noise.

A have also had a failure of the drivers side front window (switch not illuminated thus window not moving). Could this be related?

Any idea what the issue might be? I'm going to try a new battery as soon as possible because it could be a cheap fix but if it doesn't fix it it won't be a huge loss. Also, if it does end up going to the garage do you think it would be worth trying to worm a free or discounted repair because the same issue (without realising this was the issue) had happened just after they had changed the ignition coil and front off-side spring? (Big ass pot hole on my girlfriends lane.)
