Hi,

I have a 2006 1.2 activ Grande Punto that I bought at the end of November for the wife to learn in. The car is a great little run about and only has 36,000miles on the clock however yesterday it started playing up. The car has been running perfect I got it however yesterday when driving along a country road at 50mph we stopped in a car park to turn around and when the car was sat in neutral the tick over was all over the place. It kept dropping from about 900rpm to 400 rpm then jumping back up to 900 before it finally stalled after about 30 seconds. I drove it back home where it still drove perfect with no mifires or anything however everytime I stopped at a junction it would stutter again when the clutch was depressed and it is still doing it now.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Cheers

Mike.

my mate had this problem with his mk2 golf, carburetor cleaner sorted it out. maybe it could be carb related..

Funny you should say that, I had a 1.8 Skoda Octavia which was the same however it also stuttered when driving also, I took it to the nearby VW dealer and they said it just needed carb cleaner. Must be a VW thing.

I think I'll give that a try tomorrow just thought I would ask on here knowing that fiats are so fragile shal we say I wouldn't be suprised if it was some daft sensor somewhere that I'll have to sell a kidney for to replace! I let you know how I get on.

cheers.

i had this problem but it sorted itself after a few days :)

there is not carb on the gp ;)

start with the cheap things try a throttle relearn

Throttle relearn

1) switch ignition on (DONT START) for one minute
2) switch ignition off one minute
3) start car (DONT TOUCH THROTTLE AT ALL) and let idle until cooling fan cuts in (10-15mins)
4) switch off
5) repeat step 1
6) repeat step 2

and cleaning the inlet control valve cant harm

the top section of this guide shows how to get at it on the gp

you can see it in the top right of this picture

Sorry but thats the biggest load of twoddle I have ever read! surely that can't work!?

I've give it a clean with carb cleaner and it is better however with Fiats being as rubbish as they are the throttle is fly-by wire so can't open it unless the engine is running. going to try and open it by hand at the weekend. I'll either mend it or end it! :)

don't know much about cars do you?

I know my fare share, but turning a car on then off then on then off then on then off, re-learns the throttle? what does it learn the throttle to do? make a cup of tea and a biscuit!?

So have you tried this before dismissing it? What was your last car?

How do you intend to clean the carb

Oh and well done for slagging off FIATs on this forum, you will go far. Members are trying to give you advice for free, so heed it :)

ok, i'm a european master technician and i can assure you this is a valid procedure for many electronic throttle bodies (the other is a reset by fiats examiner system) .......there are 2 potentiometers in the housing connected to the butterfly flap and its the signals from these potentiometes that tell the ecu where the flap is position wise. If there is a signal issue/error, dirt in throttle body or a new throttle body has been fitted the relearn procedure must be carried out....shall i continue?

No I havn't tried it yet, I havn't dismissed it yet either thats why I wrote 'surely it can't work' with a ?. that means I'm asking a question BTW. I wanted someone to confirm if it does work however instead people seem to be beant out of shape over it!?

My other car is a Citroen Xanita, I have also had in the past a Skoda Octavia, Renault Laguna, Citroen C5, Nissan Primera, two Hyundai Elantra's, a Ford Escort and two Skoda Favorits.

I have a tin of (wait for it!) CARB CLEANER!!!!! and a rag.

Fair do's so if it is dirt that has caused the problem and when I took the air filter off it was black with crusted oil deposits I take it I should give it a good cleaning first as if not the sensor still won't be able to pick the butterfly flap up?

then try this re arm thing? Why do you have to let it run until the fan comes on?

engine at operating temperature.

So what happens if it keeps stalling as it is at the minute? it goes up and down when cold however when it gets warm the changes between revs get worse and it stalls after about 15-20 seconds?

Hello,

I cleaned the throttle body, did the relearn, but still the engine have irregular idle (~600rpm to ~1300rpm). Any other tips to solve this problem before going to a garage and give a lot of money?:D

We had exactly this on the old megane.
Taking out and cleaning the idle control valve did the trick.

However, in taking it out, this also needed to self learn. I found switching the ignition on and off a few times did the self learn.

The problem re-occurred for us about 4 times in the last few years of ownership. I should have changed the ICV, but found that a clean and small amount of grease on the rubber cup fixed it for 12 months.

They look something like this.

not sure where exactly it is on the punto, but it shouldn't be too difficult to spot.
