Gutting, I'm sure ... but what was wrong with your built-in parking sensors?
They went from slightly beeping (as in object far away) to constant in an instant as I clipped the wall. The wall was sticking out more at one point so I figure the sensors were confused and hence why I didn't notice in the mirrors until it was too late. Was hardly moving and would have been fine if it was a smooth object but the wall was harled so 2 stones sticking out went into and chipped the bumper. Will try and remember to take a pic tomorrow for before/after points of view.

i have to say, i think parking sensors are a waste of time...its not that much effort to swivvel your head half an inch to look at a mirror or two.... :p

Its easy enough in a car the size of a GP but when you get into bigger stuff they are a massive help. Reversing cameras are even better.

you're kidding? first thing yuou need to get the feel of is the dimensions of yuor car, when you know that you will have fewer scrapes, bumps and wont need reversing cameras or sensors :)

No im not, have you ever driven anything like a Cayenne, X5 or a Range Rover Sport etc and then tried to park it? Your 17 so my guess is no and combine that with you either not having passed your test or not driving for very long your not really in a position to comment. Yeah, they can be parked without either parking sensors or reversing camera but those 2 things make it a hell of a lot easier. There is only so much mirrors can show you. EG they dont show you what is directly behind your car at a lower height than the mirror covers.

So please dont give me all that sh*t about dimensions of a car etc etc which will supposedly solve everything because it doesnt (y)

i accept the slight on my driving ability based on age, but driving my dads s-class or my step mums ml-class, i do know a little about driving large cars

but i accept your point regarding my relative lack of experience (i do have my full license though)

plus, if you needed to you could lower the mirrors ;)

Have you tried to park either of them in smaller spaces? and are you honestly telling me your dad has specc'ed his cars without parking sensors on high end stuff?

he bought them second hand, i know you wont believe me (and im biased obviously :p) but my dad is an amazing parker, the spots he squeezes into are impressive....but anyway, yeh the s-class does have it, but he only got this one a few weeks ago, his old s-class didn't have it..and ml does have it (my step-mum does use it) but there is a noticeable difference in general driving ability between them...

so i guess it boils down to general ability (no slight intended on anybody's driving, some people can and some people cant)

please excuse me if i sound pompous, i dont intend to - cant get expression across very well by typing

But parking sensors and cameras arent there to replace your eyes, they are there to aid you and make it easier. When im driving our X5, the camera shows me stuff lower down that i would have 0 chance of seeing from the drivers seat with mirrors. Does that make me a bad driver? Gives me lines as well on the screen to show where its gonna go, i dont need them but its helpful.

My dad is a good parker/driver but that doesnt mean he isnt going to leave them off the options list when he specs his cars.

fair enough, but i thought this thread orginally was about hitting a wall due to over reliance on the parking sensor :p

they help spot alot of things. i know in the grande the vision through the rear view or even out of the rear window doesnt show alot low down. anytihng from posts to children could be lower than the back window so they help alot! remember you only need them to save you once when your tired or not paying attention for them to have payed for themselfs.

Well that's it fixed anyway. As you can see the damaged was low down - hence whey I did not see the obstruction in the mirrors or out the window. Still my fault though.
Before and after attached.

The new paints a little bit textured but I reckon I can improve it with some clay and polish in a week or two once I'm sure the new paint has settled.
