Starting problem (revs drop off)

Twice today i have started the car from Cold and i have had it stall the first time or two...

2006 1.2 8V Grande Active No air con 23K ish miles

if i give it a few revs or blip the throttle its fine once started and running i dont have a problem with it stalling

Not had a problem at all since it was new and it worked fine through the recent really cold weather..

what could it be?

thinking coolant temp sensor,

throttle body

damp

Re: Starting problem (revs drop off)

I'd be inclined to measure voltage of MAP sensor.
Thanks Andy Monty thanked for this post

Re: Starting problem (revs drop off)

I had this on both my alfa's. Each time it was battery related. The first was as a result of fitting too low powered a battery, the 2nd was also too low powered a battery that started doing this when it got older.

In short, replace the battery.

Mayo is normal on all italian cars in this weather. Just the moist air and it accumulates under the filler cap. Go for a long drive and it should clear.
Thanks Andy Monty thanked for this post

will slap it on my charger tonight and see if it helps tomorrow morning (it has battery recovery pulse charge) But i have had No PAS issues which seems to crop up if the battery is on its way out or flashing mileage

Not so worried about the Mayo just that reading the stilo guides it can cause erratic tick over that's all cant harm cleaning it out

Also just found another earth point which comes off the same loom bunch near the starter motor so gave that a clean up whilst i was at it (can't do any harm)

usually 3 or 4 when been stood several hours starts then revs just fall away till it stalls by the 3rd/4th attempt i have my foot on the accelerator to bring the revs up then its fine never had a problem until yesterday.. started fine this morning but then threw a fit tonight at work

have tried this tonight thought it was worth a shot

https://www.fiatforum.com/stilo/1249...ml#post1307417

take it if all else fails i can unplug it as a get me home option and the car will run fine from cold (was warm when i did it tonight)

Re: Starting problem (revs drop off)

Just an update tried the above and the car seemed to start OK this morning and tonight and the MPG has come back up so looks like it is the Map sensor

Got one ordered...

EML Light Reset.... (MAP issues)

as per my earlier post i have fitted a new MAP sensor (its a pattern part but looks identical to the OEM Bosch one right down to the casting and marks on the casing without the sticker probably a fatal mistake but we'll see) the MPG has come back up big style and the car starts way better....

i cant get the EML to turn off regardless of which sensor i plug in (the OEM one didn't trigger the EML till i run it unplugged to prove a point)......

Will it self clear after several good runs providing the new sensor is ok?

I have an OBD reader and after running it unplugged i get 2 P code faults one barometric pressure and inlet temp sensor fault as "PENDING" and another for the barometric pressure showing as "STORED"

i reset the ECU and plug the map back in then start the car EML light stays on and the "stored" fault (barometric pressure) comes back

I have just taken the battery off for an hour to see if that does any good?

Any help would be gratefully received

Re: EML Light Reset.... (MAP issues)

well taking the battery off seems to have done the trick.... Car feels like it has more power and the MPG over my usual work run is back to normal

had this problem on grande 1.4 8v 56 reg 27k miles, cured by correcting weak battery connections, fix tight with small 4mm self tapping screw into terminals (the spring loaded standard battery connectors go loose with cold mornings/ age !-) This fix also cured bad/ify starter relay, bad gearchanges from the autologic gear box when in auto mode.
miss's wanted to get rid of car, but since fix loves it once again
