This may be a silly question, but the air flow arrow on my air flow sensor is pointing away from the air box, is this normal? I'm not that knowledgeable on things like this, give me an old carb any day!

That looks correct as the air passes from the wheel arch area, up through the lower airbox, into the upper and then down toward the intercooler.

I just thought the arrow should be pointing towards the upper air box, as that would be where the air was flowing to?

I'll whip it out and have a look for that hole like, took the wiring off and the car seemed a little better with it unplugged.

It seems better but it aint, when i put a KnN on me ka (bows his head in shame) it woudnt run properly plugged in but did when it was unplugged, i decided to leave it unplugged which when mot came round it failed cos sensors were all screwed and the geezer i sold it to said the whole thing went kaput 2weeks after he had it. Might be completely unrelated but make sure you put everything back in okay lol!!!

It goes- Air box feed into bottom of airbox, air filter, out of the top into the airflow meter, then into the turbo. It points in the direction the air flows.

An improvement in running after disconnecting the airflow meter does not necessarily indicate an airflow meter fault- with no airflow readings, various components are disabled (EGR) and 'safe' parameter estimates are used to maintain driveability.
