I have this exact same problem. I reported it to my dealer(Corban Wollongong) at my 30,00kms service. They said it needed the Steering Rack replaced. I had to wait 6 weeks for them to get the part in.

They replaced it last Monday, they said 'it will still pull a little to the left as your tyres are scrubbed a little on one side. When you replace them, it should be fine.' I haven't replaced the tyres yet. It has improved a little, but I suspect the problem will still be there once I have replaced the tyres.

I'm very interested in finding out how they propose to fix yours..

When you say "I have this exact same problem" are you referring to the car pulling to the left, or the steering wheel not going back to the middle position?

The steering pulling to the left..It has done it since day one of ownership, but has got worse as the left front tyre wore out quicker than the right.

They tried to tell me that the 'steering rack needs replacing as it had to much play in the power steering' . Yet when I picked it up after the rack had been replaced, I was told the 'pulling to the left would improve when the tyres wer replaced..

So your steering wheel is ok in the sense it returns to the middle position?

They've reassured me that because the wheel alignment is perfect, it is not causing any uneven wear. I would love to believe that but somehow I don't (especially after hearing your story).

They've swapped the front and back tyres around so hopefully it can buy some time..

Btw roughly how much thread is left on your front tyres, and how many kms have you done?

Yes it retuns to the centre position, but because it pulls to the left, you have to over correct it..

They swapped the front tyres to the rear at the 30,00kms service. I have done 36,000kms (another 6000 since they were swapped). The left one has about 2-3mm left, the right about 4-5mm.

The wear & tear on mine is a lot worst than yours - my mileage is only a third of yours and yet has about the same amount of thread.

From the sounds of things the steering rack could be causing the problem.. if you're ok with it can you let me know your number plate via PM, so I can ask the dealer to check with Ateco on your case (assuming Corban had contacted them for advice when they were trying to fix yours up)?

My number plate is (sent via PM)
Not sure if they called Fiat Head office (Ateco) about it though..

shall we take this as part 3 of the trilogy Kev? :)

can someone design a cover for them.
hey, if it keeps going we could do like on the spines of the bond dvd's where it makes up a picture of a white punto with viper stripes on it :slayer:

Yeh guys, its funny when you're not the one with a faulty car :(

I haven't heard back from dealer and something tells me I won't be hearing from them any time soon..

I honestly cant believe how shocking the Oz dealers are.

Well part of the reason is because they refuse help from other people. I mentioned FF to the first dealer, which he flogged it off to be utterly useless. I mentioned FF to this dealer, and he said forums are just a place where people ramble and complain. Yes that's true, and that's how things get fixed because people share information with each other

Kev?
You are getting absolutely nowhere mate, its time to bite the bullet.....go see a solicitor.

The last time Fiat AU promised they'll "look into finding a solution" for the juddering Dualogic - guess what - I never heard back

Yeh I know mate - I'm looking forward to Monday..

Edit: http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/3863

As a consumer, goods that you purchase must:

* be of merchantable quality—goods have to meet a basic level of quality and performance given the price and description of the goods
* be fit for the purpose—goods must do the job you made clear to the supplier you wanted them to do or that are implied from the circumstances in which you purchased the goods
* match the description or sample given to you before purchase, whether through a catalogue, labelling, packaging, on a website or in person.

But looks like I have to lodge a written complaint first (should be a piece of cake - not that I haven't had any experience in that ), then go to ACCC if not satisfactory.

If I get a BS answer on Monday here's what's going in the post:

Dear Sir/Madam,

This is the third, and final written complaint that I’m making about my car, a Fiat Punto 2006, registration number xxx xxx.

My car has developed a problem with its steering since late 2007. I have been to two different dealerships and neither could rectify the problem.

The problem is, when a left turn is made, the steering wheel does not return to the center position, causing the car to severely pull to the left. The same does not happen with right turns. I have demonstrated this to the technicians at Sydney City Alfa, who has witnessed this, and acknowledges the steering is faulty.

This needs to be resolved ASAP because of three reasons:
  1. It is dangerous to drive a car that doesn’t drive straight.
  2. How am I going to sell my car when it obviously has a serious safety issue/fault?
  3. It has caused premature wear and tear to the front tyres. The front left has only 3mm left while the front right has 5mm. I have had several wheel alignments done and tyre pressures checked and they are both perfectly fine.
Under your instructions the steering motor has now been replaced, but this did not resolve the problem. Sydney City Alfa have advised me they’re now awaiting further instructions from you on the next steps to take.

Its been well over a week since we’ve last heard from you and I need to know what you’ll be doing to have this resolved. I would like you to call me (xxxx xxx xxx) by COB Friday 29th February to discuss this further; if not I’ll be taking the matter straight to the ACCC.

Thank you and Best regards,
Kevin

Regarding the Dualogic judder, does it cut out, or just judder?
there is an update out which rectifies the juddering, it makes it extremely smooth, i've had it dont all both my demos and numerous customers cars.
the steering problem, i've not had anything from over this side.

Good luck with the letter Kevin.
