Technical GP Idle Speed

Hi again AJK, did you get anywhere with the details I gave you in August? Have you had any work done on the car since your posts in August? Lets get some up to date info mate.

Hi again AJK, did you get anywhere with the details I gave you in August? Have you had any work done on the car since your posts in August? Lets get some up to date info mate.

Thanks for your reply mate - Fiat seem to be playing hard ball with me - they have said that they can't possibly comment on other cases. They dont have any recorded incidents where other Grande Punto's have similar problems to mine and as they couldn't replicate the problem in the workshop, they are saying that they don't want to know!!

Last time round they re-set the ECU which cured the problem for a while, as before, but it started cutting out at idle speed again on Tuesday 28th Oct. I took it straight to the dealers (cutting out at every junction, traffic lights etc on the way - it's still doing it two days later). When I got to the dealers, one of their technicians came and had a look and basically agreed that it was cutting out at idle speed (dropping to about 400rpm and dying!!) - because they are busy, they couldn't get it booked in until Friday 14th Nov, by which time if it follows previous patterns, it will probably have re-set itself.

I suspect they'll just re-set the ECU as before and keep fobbing me off until the warranty runs out.

I have made an official complaint to Fiat UK about the situation, but they'll probably file that under B (for Bin!!)

As you can probably see, I'm starting to get rather stressed out by the whole thing :bang: :bang: - the reason Fiat UK fobbed me off was that they couldn't replicate the fault in the dealers workshop - so I take it down to them, they see it cutting out AND THEY ARE STILL FOBBING ME OFF!!

Has anybody else suffered like this with Fiat Customer Service ??

On a plus note - apart from this issue with the car, we are very happy with the vehicle (y) I just seem to be one of those people that draw the short straw!! my next door neigbour bought a pre-registered GP 1.4 dynamic on a 57 plate and it's been fine - he's 100% happy with his (sods law that I get the naff one!!)

Any guidance would be appreciated :worship: :worship:

you must understand that if the fault cant be replicated there is little that can be done...your simply looking for something that is not there!

However yes I can understand your frustration, has a field engineer been out to see the car yet? Customer services are not qualified on technical matters, you need someone with the required knowledge to inspect the car.

Where are you in the UK?

I'm in Nottingham - the Guy's at Sandicliffe have been good, but like all of us, they're very busy.

Regarding the field engineer - I can only pass on what I've been told by Fiat UK, and they're saying that "if our technical team were aware of this as a know concern, they would have advised Sandicliffe to replace components. As they cannot replicate the fault, they cannot carry out any repairs."

The guy's at Sandicliffe have now logged that the vehicle has a problem cutting out at idle speed (which is what I've been saying for a year and a half), but I bet that when I take the car into them on 14th Nov it will have re-set itself again and be running as normal. which will mean that they'll probably re-set the ECU again, to provide a temporary fix, then it'll re-occur again in a couple of months.

I'm getting an awful feeling of deja vu at the moment - we're just going over the same ground without getting any closer to a satisfactory conclusion - like fixing the problem!!

Now that I'm thinking about it, it does appear to develop a slight problem with the mileage display just prior to the above happening - I was driving home from work and noticed the display flashing between the mileage & MPG figure, without me touching the controls (weird or what!!) - it did this until I stopped the car, turned off the ignition and restarted the car.

The following day is when the car started to cut out at idle speed - do you think the cars computer has a virus ??

Is my car full of Gremlins, like in the film ;)

Faults such as yours are really annoying for the techs aswell as you cant help thinking that the customer thinks you are not trying. You could change part(s) as a calculated guess but you wont know for a couple of months if it has cured it or not:(

I had a similar problem & resetting the ECU helped for a few days then customer complained that the revs were dropping again...cant remember what t was now but think I changed the ECU...BUT this doesn't mean this applies to your car as it was more regular than yours, every few days.

Apart from the idle speed issues - we think the cars great!! (y)

Sorry to moan about it, but I feel like I'm getting no joy from Fiat at the moment :cry:

It always seems to happen when the weather starts getting colder - it didn't happen during the summer months, but now the weathers turning colder, it starts again

To put a positive spin on things it's only going to get colder, which means it's onl going to happen more, which means it'll be easier to shop the Fiat tech.

;)

AJK you have a pm

Hi Guys,

I was thinking about the problems I'm having with my GP - in the long term, if they don't sort it out for me, is it possible for me to re-set the ECU myself, which would at least provide a temporary fix ??

It would be a shame to have to get rid of my GP, because apart from this issue, it's a very nice little car (y) (+ money's tight at the moment (n))
