We have a 6 yr old daughter who is dead keen to have a Nintendo DS Lite for xmas (because most of her friends have one)

We are less keen as it is a bit 'insular' and not very interactive (and because most of her friends have one) - as far as we know anyway, which isn't very much!

We are a bit taken by the Nintendo Wii, which seems more open and interactive for all the family to play with together.

Any comments? What would be a good solution? Whatever we get needs to appeal to all of us in terms what games are available for a 6 yr old and a couple of 40-somethings!

Cheers :)

Thank you - not sure we'd let her carry it round too much anyway, certainly not to school - she rarely comes home all the clothes she went to school in, let alone something a bit more valuable than a sweatshirt! But I guess the portability would come in 'useful' sometimes like when camping - then again it's usually raining so wouldn't want it out then anyway

Which gaming system to buy - if any?

I am reposting my own post here as it is on another thread / area / whatever... so I can FAIL myself etc, but I thought I'd stick it on here anyway to reach a wider audience...I have already had a good response from one FF'er, so thank you to that person. (y)

the wii is better other than the portability issue. the DS lite can be taken in the car, to a friend's house, or anywhere.

think of the DS lite as a portable wii, because that is what it bascially is.

both are well suited to a 5yo girl. there are plenty of kiddy games. other consoles have far fewer options for a 5yo, although the PSP has a fair few kiddy games now.

there is nothing insular about the DS. it has several connectivity options to allow group play and networking.

the wii has instant family fun because it is on the biggest screen in your home and the games are often designed for group play. that is its greatest strength and its greatest weakness. if you want to play by yourself away from the TV then you're stuck. realistically most kids want to play games by themselves anywhere they choose. most parents want that too, its less hassle for you and it means you can watch national geographic while your daughter is kept amused with the DS.

which you choose really only depends on what you want; a home console or a portable console.

Get the Wii, She will love it, you will love it.

Wii Sports and Mario Kart is so much fun!!!

Once you have played it you will end up taking over it.
(if that does happen, you might wanna get her the DS too :D )

DS is less insular than you think it is, has a wireless connection that allows you to share games with friends so she will be able to play against them as long as she's within 25 feet. I.e. they can sit in the same room playing against eachother.

Wiis are good too, slight lack of titles with more than just novelty value there are some with staying power, a great many that are dull after 2 hours but if she's 6 she probably won't notice.

my sister is six and she has both, but she prefers the wii as she says its alot more fun and the is no need to charge the thing up every day...and has better features then the DS...

plus IMO the wii keeps kids more healthy especially with wii fit....plus she prefers the game on the wii more than the DS light.....

The Wii is deffo a family console. My 46 year old mum is addicted to bowling on Wii sports. :D and I bought the console.

and Guitar Hero is good too. :D

I bought both and my mum and dad are always on my DS on brain training, and they would the other trainign games aswell if i bought them.

I like mario cart and super mario bros and stuff so people of all ages can enjoy the DS.

My mum and dad never play on the wii unless we have some family round when it makes for some great entertainment.

It depends if you want a portable thing or something that is better but static.

Well, in the end we went for a DS Lite from the dreaded Toys r Us.

What swayed it was we had a go in the shop and enjoyed playing on it, (as much as the Wii, just different). The package was good and the price was half of what a Wii with 3 controllers would have cost, so although I think the Wii is prob a bit more fun in some ways, the price and the fact that it was better than we'd thought it would be swayed it. :D

Hopefully a Happy Christmas will now ensue - up 'til meal times anyway!! ;)
