Wii outselling PlayStation 3 two-to-one in Japan

4 April 2007
In the latest figures released by the company Enterbrain it is revealed that in Japan the Nintendo Wii is outselling Sony's PlayStation 3 two to one.

Bloomberg news reported that approximetely 2 million Wii consoles have been sold in Japan since its launch on December 2 while only 812,000 PS3 units have been sold since it went on sale on November 11th.

Although that is a large gap, it seems that the sales gap is narrowing as time moves on. In January, the company Media Create reported that the ration of Wii sales compared to PS3 sales was 4-to-1.

Japanese sales figures for the Xbox 360 were not released but in general sales fail to top four figures according to Enterbrain.

and just to keep it unbiased ;) the 360 is struggling in japan just as the xbox 1 does.
they just dont like to buy american ;)

Im not suprised, the Wii is much more fun and value for money- as Ive said in other posts, even a mate of mine who is playstation through and through, and has been wating for ages for a PS3, has admited he would rather have a Wii due to its value for money, and not being complicated

the Wii is probably much more fun but will it last? it may be good for party times but will the gaming evolve to make it a leader in it's class?

i haven't actually had a go on one though, though apparently my friends brother is sposed to be getting one soon so i shall have a play. but going by what i have heard from various sources already its good, but can get dull after a while. like liking bowling and then going everyday more than once would make it dull. much like the playstation eyetoy. some may say that the singstar as well but just get drunk with a few friends and have a go on it :D .

i think the wii is kind of the sign of way things are going to go. eg. the ps3 has motion sensitive controllers. but it is essentially based on a gamecube which from my limited experience wasn't the best. i must admit now that i was a sonic fan and so my view of nintendo is slightly biased but i think that nintendo have rushed out the wii though it may be to buy time to bring out a new console?

nah there playing smart.
look at the revenue generated for what is essentially an upgraded GC than new hardware.their laughing all the way to the bank.
they dont have the budget to go head to head on sony or M$ on power but have utilised a great niche(though it seems not so small!) market.
they may go for more power on the next round of consoles but i dont see them rushing to do another with the hardware sales they are generating coupled with the DS.
remember they will really be on profit(i assume) on each WII sold whereas M$ and sony rely on software sales

Basking in the glory of a highly profitable lineup of console games, Japanese game maker Nintendo has revamped their sales target for this year. Nintendo now states that it expects its official sales from the beginning of the year through March to be up from its expected 900 billion Yen ($8.1bn; £4.1bn) to an astounding 966 billion.

Credit can be given to its still wildly successful DS handheld, a successful launch of its new Wii console as well as several sleeper titles that gained massive popularity such as its Brain Teasing exercises.

Many analysts are surprised at Nintendo's success and the speed at which its units are continuously selling out even when faced with stiff competition from Sony's PS3 and the highly successful Microsoft Xbox 360.

Nintendo is expected to release its official sales figures on April 26.

i haven't actually had a go on one though......

Everyone says it's only good for party games until they actually have a go on one. I don't play games as much as I used to but have become hooked since having a Wii and Call of Duty3. The games are alot more involving for example in Call of Duty you actually pick off enemy with your own steady hand. It makes using the 3d stick for this type of game feel like doing up shoe laces with chop sticks, it really is that much better. There's a growing number of games using the Wiimote innovation properly now- check SSX blur for one example.

Graphically, it's up to the developer what effot they put in. Seen some amazing stuff in some games:D

The thing with the Wii at the moment is it's recieving so many PS2 ports, because its just easier for the developer to do that.

The Wii is alot more powerful than the PS2. Even the GameCube was.
Nintendo said at the time that the Wii was approximatly 2-3 times the power of the GameCube.

Anyone seen trailers of Super Mario Galaxy? It looks absolutley gorgeous, deffinatly nothing the PS2 or GameCube could do. It's just annoying that developers are taking the lazy route with graphics and trying to make money through the Wii's control scheme.

The same happened with the Dreamcast. Countless PS1 ports that looked shocking. Whereas games that were designed for it looked damn good. Dead or Alive 2 actually looks better on Dreamcast than it did on PS2.

as did soul caliber.this was always my bugbear with sony(but i hide it :D) that they are great at smoke and mirrors.
people just forget they put out pre rendered images as ingame footage for the ps2 when building the emotion engine (over)hype

Yeah it's strange how it goes. Developer make a crummy port and decide to stop developing for the console when it doesn't sell well. This hasn't happened yet for the Wii but did on several occasions for the Cube.

If it's a good game you'll get it for whichever console it comes out on first if you have more than one. Stuff was always released later on the Cube compared to its rivals, so it lost out that way. Some developers don't seem to understand that for some reason:bang:

I like the Wii. I haven't had a go on one yet, but feel as a stand alone console it would tire after a while, but as an additional peice of kit its got my vote.

Its just trying to get hold of one, and then making space to throw my arms around,,,,,

:)

Ive had mine a while now and not bored of it, getting frustrated at sonic and prince of persia is quite nifty and looks great

Great console for sure. Everyone should have a go as playing is believing how good it is. People are scared cos Nintendo hasn't been regarded 'cool' for a while.

Is Sonic worth getting? Have been weighing that up between SSX Blur and Heatseeker.

Right now the Wii is an innovative novelty so is selling by the bucketload but while there are a few good games out there the lack of good games downstream is a bit worrying.

Also, Sony and M$ have now seent he success of the Wiimote and sensor bar so it won't be long until they develop their own as separate accessories for the PS3 and 360 or if not, they will do so for the next gen.

For me, Nintendo focus too much on "kids games". I like ultra-realistic graphics and general mayhem. I prefer that to cutesy graphics but I recognise that this won't be the case for many people.

I don know Wii owners who are now regretting their purchase becasue they have grown tired of the games tehy have and there are not enough games coming out. I can see sales dropping if the game developments don't pick up.

my ex had a wii sold it for more than she paid for it after 2 months of use...which is about the life span before you realise its a one trick pony....tho tbf she has a 360 and a p.c. as well...it was good for party games...but distinctly average at other game types...to the point that it hadnt been switched on for 3 weeks when she sold it...

the ps3 seems to have just faded away lately huh., all the hype is gone and the majority of people would have the 360 over it, including me,., i would have thought that by now they would have a few good quality games for it.,

Its the same old story, the dreaded summer games draught. I hate this time of year for game releases. the 360 had a similar draught after its launch with only things like Burnout and GRAW to keep you going. Hell I even remember buying Over G fighters I was that desparate for new games.

yeah but at least the 360 had good titles already.., it was launched on PGR and GRAW IIRC.,., i was gonna get the ps3 for my nephew but now he got the Wii and he loves it.,
