Hey everyone

I'm back again with yet another question. I bought a Bravo a month or two ago (off eBay - for my sins) and although it looks "the ****" (some girl even chatted me up in a petrol station tonight, complimenting the little beauty), so far the battery has died, the exhaust has fallen off, and now the freakin' engine is a-whistling.

It doesn't start whistling until I have driven about 5-10 miles, but once it starts I can hear it if I have the window open just slightly. It seems to whistle at a fairly high pitched key from 0-40MPH (so yes it does it when standing), and then a high pitched whistle at anything faster than 40.

The car is on 88,000 miles and my paperwork says the cam belt was replaced at 75,000 miles in 2004.

Any idea what it is, anyone?

The engine you have may be a help chap :)

If you have had the exhaust recently changed then it may not be sealed up properly.

maybe a slipping belt or even the power steering pump. dont think a leaking exhaust would "whistle"

That would depend on how small the gap was for the leak.

A belt slipping would not sound like a whistle. That is more of a screetching noise.

I am only trying to help.

Thanks for the input guys - I should have mentioned that the whistling noise was there before the exhaust fell off. The fact that it has remained the same since the exhaust was replaced suggests it is a problem elsewhere.

It does seem to be coming from the engine region. I'm gonna get it serviced I think, cos I haven't got a clue.

It may be one of the pully wheels for the belts that's whistling, had the same prob two months ago and once the guide pully and the tension pully were replaced it went away.

Just been reading in the Haynes that some causes of this are as follows;
a) Leaking inlet manifold gasket.
b) Leaking exhaust manifold gasket or front pipe-to-manifold joint.
c) Leaking vacuum hose.
d) Blowing cylinder head gasket.
Hope this helps mate.

Try shutting the window, sounds like wind noise to me!
