I have a 2011 2.3 X250 with 36000 miles Motorhome.

Last October while on my way to Isle of Bute from Dumfries I noticed the red warning steering wheel symbol light up. After a quick google with no joy I topped up the reservoir which wasn’t actually low, but the light went out. Then back on 50 miles later, then off. Then getting off the ferry it’s back on again.

And off

And on.

Then it stopped. I tried to check further and perhaps it’s to do with the stability control switch on the steering column? Some advice was to go lock to lock a few times, switch off and back on.

Then it’s been off until yesterday when it did it all over again. My lock to lock a few times seems to have stopped it but I’d like to get it sorted if possible before I cover a few thousand miles later this year in France on holiday

Something noticeable when it’s lit is the steering gets a bit notchy, rattly at tickover and the steering when stationary is bit heavier than usual. It is fine when driving. I have turned off the engine while moving and with the engine dead it is very clear that the pump is working when the motor is running.

Over to you, any thoughts?

Sounds like the pressure is actually low and/or fluctuating- lamp indicator will be correct in this case if so. Will Multiecuscan (trial version may do the job) record pressures in the system, or do a flight recorder run and see what goes out of parameter, assuming it can be monitored?

A bit more info.

We have checked for codes and have come up with C1012 and C1017. Cleared them and started again.

Firstly, the fluid is exactly on the max as I knew it would be.

Secondly, it only does it when the engine is warm.

When the solenoid wiring is disconnected from the switch it immediately gives the red light, then the same 2 codes, and the steering defaults to a slightly firmer feeling. If you drive it like that you wouldn’t know there was anything amiss as the steering is very smooth, just not quite as light.

So, solenoid or steering ECU? That appears to be the answer, maybe.

Has anyone any experience of changing either? And more importantly know where the steering ecu is? Assuming that there is a separate controller

Re: Power steering warning light -SOLVED?

Hopefully a final update. We were unable to find anything amiss after clearing the codes and over 1000 miles later the fault has not recurred. And so we’re putting it down to dodgy Italian electricals.
