My 07 3.0 is having problems starting when warm. It is slowly getting worse. Most times starting cold it fires first time but when warm it often coughs and splutters and takes several attempts to start.

I had an issue with 2 glow plugs snapped in head and I thought this was the problem so I had these removed and replaced but still the same.

Scan shows P0335 error ( Crankshaft position sensor ) but this comes up only when it fails to start. Once the engine is running it ticks over fine and runs and drives as it should.

I have replaced the earth straps to the chassis/battery and to the chassis/gearbox.

I have used another good battery and still the same.

I have also done a leak off test and this showed for one minute test

Injector 1 20ml
Injector 2 17.5ml
Injector 3 19ml
Injector 4 16ml

Does anyone think these results are an issue?

Not sure what to do next, anyone got any ideas.

Thanks. Mike

No wouldn't say they are to bad tbh , there isn't really any hard and fast leak off figures really as long as they are round about the same that's fine , I would be scoping the crank sensor over several occasions and see if you can catch it when it plays up .

Try freezer spray on the sensor when it doesn't want to start.Definitely take it out and inspect for dirt / dmf debris. is timing belt due?

Thanks guys I will look at the sensor. I thought it was doing it's job as the error only comes up after it tries to start and coughs and splutters and throws out the bendix leaving the starter spinning the ECU expects the engine to be running but the sensor reports that it is not so the error is reported.

The sensor does not have any issues at any other time. I have no cutting out, missing or rough running, just being a pig to start sometimes when warm

Same issue on my 3.0 180, Euro 5

Odd occasions only when warm, at its service a couple of weeks back I asked them to change the earth strap, as it's inexpensive and after 200,000 miles it won't do any harm,
Anyway it was only loose, so they tightened it up, it's better but still happens just not as often, no warning lights show up, she starts like new on 2nd go,
I'm assuming the strap is cracked and heat is opening up the crack maybe, causing bad earth, or the bolts and faces of metal are corroded and interfering,
Need to try and get underneath and see if I can access it and pop a new one on and clean up where it mounts.

rolopolo. No need to get underneath, Take the air filter lid of, remove airfilter, look over the top and down the back of the filter housing and you will see the earthstrap going from the gearbox mount to the chassis. I have changed this and the one on the battery but still the same.

***Update***

I got fed up with my starting issue so took the camper to electro/diesel specialist in Swansea. as soon as they started it the 2 guy's looking at it said "starter motor" I said are you sure as it starts sometimes without a problem.

We will take it off and test it came the reply. They came back to me a short time later (n) its knackered. fault with windings and drive worn.

We can rebuild it or replace it they said, I chose to replace it with a new Bosch unit.

Only collected it this afternoon but it's starting much quieter and on the button with no problems yet (y) fingers crossed that it stays that way :)

Hope yours is sorted Mike :)

Mines just had new throttle body fitted today after the hot starting issues and in the wet on Saturday she threw her doll out the pram and went into limp mode just after I had a stuck throttle for a second upon hard acceleration,
Picking up in morning, he said the old one gunged up but will investigate when I get old one home, he also popped new Earth strap on as I never got round to it :)
Hopefully two issues sorted
