Hi

I have a 1998 9.9d van with the 1929cc fiat engine.

I've had a look at my cambelt today as the van is noisy, smokey and slow and hence thought pump timing may be off (and I have no idea when it was last changed). I can find a mark on the cam pulley and a hole on the rear cover, I can see 2 marks on the injector pump pulley! but no mark on the cover. Also I can't find a plate on the bellhousing to check for TDC. Does someone know where all the marks are and how to align them?

Also the belt seems quite loose to me, how do I set tension, does it require a special too?

On a seperate note, what should the valve clearances be set to? The only information I can find iis for a Brava and is hard to dechiper but seems to say inlet should be 0.3mm and exhaust 0.35mm but doesn't say if should be set hot or cold. Is this correct.

Cheers

I am not an expert but have some data for this engine: first the easy bit. Valve clearances are as you have them set cold.

There is a special tool for tensioning and there are two other special tools that do not seem to just be timing pins, if the engine no. is 1723291 or later. If 1723290 or before there is only a tensioning tool.

The timing marks: with the timing marks on all three pulleys at the tops of the pulleys ( if it is a non-turbo ) they should line up with corresponding marks: sorry can't tell you exactly where they are. If it is a turbo then the camshaft mark is at about 2 o'clock.

The repair time is given as 1.05 hours.

I trust that this information is accurate but I cannot guarantee that. Hope it helps.

It is a non turbo.

I'll have another look tomorrow.

Thanks for the info.
