Drive shaft removal 1993 Ducato

I have traced the juddering on my 1993 Dicato to the left driveshaft. How do I remove this? The inner joint seems to have collapsed. I know I will need a 41mm socket with a 1in drive to get the hub nut off but how do I reomove the inner joint from the gearbox?

Thanks.

Simon.

On the drawings I have seen it looks as if a circlip holds the inner end into the gearbox/differential. What I do not see is how you can remove this circlip (or springclip) without first removing the riveshaft from the gearbox which you cant do until you remove the circlip..... Chicken and egg situation???

Re: Drive shaft removal 1993 Ducato

This is not so much a proper circlip as a springy circle of wire. If you apply enough pull to the driveshaft it will compress into its groove and allow the driveshaft to come out.

There is probably a proper tool for the job but the Peter Russek manual suggests levering with a flat chisel between gearbox and UJ.

Obviously it is better to renew this clip when you come to refit the shaft, another suggestion is to use an appropriately sized keyring if you can't obtain the proper item

Thanks Crossing Keeper, I thought it must be something like that, I just didnt want to risk it pinging off inside the gearbox and giving me more work.

I will be getting a new driveshaft so hopefully it will come with a new ring.

Where can I get a copy of the Peter Russek manual you mentioned?

Re: Drive shaft removal 1993 Ducato

Hi Simon,

The manuals are sometimes available on ebay or you could get one from the publishers,

http://russek-publications.com/

good luck, I had to remove both driveshafts when I changed my clutch & it wasn't that difficult (as I didn't need to undo the axle nut) BUT the n/s shaft became loose about 200 miles later, I think this was because I didn't knock it back hard enough to secure the clip (or because I reused the original clip!)

Re: Drive shaft removal 1993 Ducato

Drive shaft is now off. I used a fork type ball joint splitter and just knocked it between the driveshaft and the gearbox. Once it had gone past the clip it was easy.

Now to find a new shaft and get it all back together.

Thanks again.

Simon.
