Well yesterday I took all the wheels off 1 by 1 to clean all the dirt out from behind them to stop them sooting up so quickly after I wash them. At the same time I was going to wash and check the brakes to make sure they're all ok. To cut a long story short, rear drums and pads are like new, front disks are like new but the pads are a little worn.

So I've decided when I get paid to splash out around £40 on a set of EBC Green Stuff Uprated pads for Fast Road/Heavy Load use. Was only another £15 for these and they're supposed to create less dust too.

Anyone replaced the brake pads before, any tips? I know vaguely how to do them had a look plus I got my workshop manual! Also what pads have you used?

Oh and another tip, I also adjusted the handbrake at the drum end, and it's now a lot better. Doesn't come up as much as is reassuringly good at holding the car on inclines now :) they are supposed to be self adjusting, but like on the Fo*ds it doesn't always work!

Ozzie,

Why do you want to mess with the specification of your brakes? Are you going to be doing some track days?

Your existing brakes are more than capable of locking up your front wheels if used too hard. Increased pad/disc friction will just make this happen quicker and require a finer level of control to avoid during an emergency stop - not always the best environment to practice slight brake pedal pressure adjustments as you'll, probably be dealing with several other matters at the same time    (looking for an escape route/sounding the horn/streering round the hazard etc).

Uprated pads sound like a good thing but are they in practice?

Its all well and good having pads that perform well when being used hard (fast road use etc) but are you sure that the increased performance isn't provided at the cost of worse performance when they are cold? You'd look a right muppet running into the back of the car in front because your new 'high performance' pads don't work very well during cold normal use.(n)

Have you considered the increased disc wear that will possibly be caused by these pads (if they give less dust then I assume they wear less, therefore they must be harder material, therefore your discs will wear faster/get hotter/warp).

Have fun with your new brakes.

Ok just to clarify a few things Niall :)

1: The uprated brakes are made from a slightly different material and are designed for the purpose of either light fast cars, or heavier slower cars, thus they are designed to brake a car that's heavier than the normal pads for the Doblo.
2: Yes they do create slightly less dust, but not by a heck of a lot (they do Red Stuff pads for this for track day cars etc.) so they claim they won't increase the disk wear by much more than the standard ones.
3: They sell the OEM pads for the Doblo, these are an optional upgrade and are recommended for the Doblo - you can't get them on all cars!
4: They work better than OEM at cold, due to their special material, and also offer better braking during the "running in" period.

So, are you still not convinced :p

Ozzie,

You've obviously done your homework on this. :worship:

When is the lowered suspension, painted calipers, performance chip, big exhaust, noisey air fliter, fluffy dice & bling interior being fitted? (y)

NAA (not at all) :p

Although I am showing my car at the Wales Car Show at Chepstow Racecourse at the end of the month on the FiatForum stand :D so a few modifications may come in handy ;)

OEM pads are a different specifaction to Green Stuff pads, uprated brakes are ment to be used as a full set, front and rear. The only reason that they are available for the Doblo, is because they share the front discs and calipers of other FIATS, while your at it why not got some drilled and grooved discs. Should be an interesting proposition, uprated front brakes, Doblo handling, wet roads,

I'm not going that far, there's no harm in me trying them! If they work, great! If they're too sensitive and keep locking all the time then fair enough :) I drive like a granny anyway so handling is not an issue!
