Hi All,
"We've" bought a 53000 mile 08 Fiat Doblo 1.9 diesel (not even sure if its turbo) with a knackered engine. We were told its got a loud knocking noise and bought it with the intention of dropping another engine in. But, we had to tow it home from Diss in Norfolk and as that was 90 odd miles it would have been bloody hard work trying to steer it without the engine on and we needed lights and indicators, so we came back with the engine idling all the way, thinking what damage was done was already done and we were probably going to drop another engine in anyway. Thing is it idled perfectly all the way and didnt overheat, smoke or throw up any management lights etc.

So I had a quick listen to it tonight and on idle it sounds, well, err like a hollow noise, like the air filter was hanging off is the best way I can think to describe it. Now as for the knock when you rev it there is definitely a knock coming from the engine. I couldn't really locate the noise as I was on my own at the time and needed someone to rev it whilst I listened to it. But walking round it sounds like its coming from up the gearbox end. I cant be sure but it sounds louder at that end than the other. I'm going up the yard at the weekend and will take a stethoscope and get someone to rev it whilst I tap around with the stethoscope trying to locate it.

I was sat there thinking and I presumed this thing has a dual mass flywheel? I have no experience of a failed one of these other than I recall someone saying you get a vibration through the clutch pedal when its pressed down? Cant say I noticed that at all as the clutch was smooth in operation and worked well when I was shunting it back and forth in the yard. But could the knocking be the DMF?

I'll video it over the weekend and post up the vid so you can hear it. Anyone care to take a guess on what the knocking could be?

I went round and had a look tonight. Very strange. There is a sort of booming resonance coming from the airbox area? The knock, well its like its pinking! It is also running very very rich. Its over fuelling and belching out black smoke. The pinking/rattle sounds to be coming from the op left hand side of the engine. It isnt there if you hold a constant RPM but if you rev it you hear it!!

If its a Turbo, I would thoroughly check that the pipes are sealed or that none of them have developed a slight leak

Oh and something else. Check that it has an air filter in the box. I heard something similar many years ago in a car and the garage that previously serviced it had failed to fit any filter in the box at all.

Yup, will check for an air filter tonight. I think its going to go into a local diesel specialists to get their opinion. Does anyone know if the injectors are coded on these?

Been looking into this abit more. I thought it was over fuelling or dieseling as we used to call it. Anyway its running rough and kicking out black smoke. So we hooked up the lead and ran the ecu scan software. Below is a photo of the scan results. Googling the p0204/3/2/1 fault codes its clear there are injector issues or a fault on the injector loom but I wanted to check that a faulty rpm sensor couldnt tell the ecu to add more fuel could it?

If it is injector problems, why would 4 injectors start playing up or is this not unheard of?

We have a spare low mileage engine which was running perfectly before removal. Could we just swap the injectors over as a means of elimination?

Its dropping a shell on the big end... usually no.3 on these.... drop sump leave pistons in and replace big and bearings...(oil them as you fit them).. and do the oil and filter at the same time...

My jtd has 520,000 miles now so ive been through this

Have to say it doesnt sound like an end at all and a big end wouldn't make it run rich?

520000!

Took it into F.I.E.S. a local diesel specialists ot get the injectors checked. They are all fine and the guy says its got a induction (inlet) valve out and that's why were getting the resonance in the air box etc. So its head off time. :)

It turned out one of the buckets had broken and the shim had exited stage left! Cam out and new replacements in and a new cambelt and it runs like a swiss watch now, well a Doblo 1.9 JTDm but you get the gist.

I had the same thing on a Berlingo/Partner thingymujig a couple years back.

It was being revved for the smoke test and there was a rattle & smoke.

It had somehow managed to lift the bucket, turn it a few degree's and slammed it back in the hole

Not only did the bucket shatter, it also smashed the head in such a manner it wasn't fixable

I just dropped in another engine and drove it until I was offered silly money for the van.... Fantastic runner, clean van, gutted because the original engine was 89k and the replacement was 178k :(

Anyway, good result (y)
