Cleaning egr valve

Hi everyone
I have looked at a thread on this forum with the same title which I thought was great, as it gave great detail & pics from start to finish. I have a 2002 doblo 1910 JTD SX & took the cover off to have a look & mine looks different from the one in the picture on the other thread, so just want to check. Is it located in the top right hand corner, as this was the only bit that looked the same (corrugated stainless pipe) it also has a rubber pipe (about 60mm diamater) attached to it with a jubilee clip, & appears to go to the radiator .
I'm quite handy with things but wanted to check I was taking the right bit apart before I go loosening things off lol as you will obviously tell frm my post, I'm not someone who works regularly on cars/vans, but having said that, have changed a gearbox on an LDV before, as once shown by someone how to do it.
So just want to check that I'm taking the right bit apart before I do it.

Cheers
Darren

Re: Cleaning egr valve

I believe the Doblo 1.9 JTD engine is the same 8v engine used in many Fiats(Bravo, Punto, Stilo etc.).

So this guide to cleaning your EGR should give you all the information you need.

Re: Cleaning egr valve

Hi there

No one replied the day I posted or the next day, so I just got a mechanic to do it for me.
He said that if this was a customer who brought it in at work, that they would not mess around doing it & just order a new part for the customer , so for those that can do it, its worthwhile doing so .
Anyway he didn't have time to take it for a spin so told me to take it & "give it a good thrashing" (not something I normally do with my motors lol) & not to worry if I saw loads of black smoke as it would be clearing everything out or something like that . Anyway took it to 40mph in 2nd gear & he was right about all the black smoke lol.
It seems to have cleared though & the slow sluggish van that I was sold is probably faster than my jag now lol, & it felt like I was driving a sports car .
In fact I have got so used to driving it the way it was over the last couple of weeks that I have owned it, that the way I usually drive it to make sure I pull awar as quick as possible at roundabouts caused me to do a little wheelspin when I pulled away from the 1st roundabout since being fixed .

Okay then.
I'm over the moon with the van now. But is it normal after these EGR valves being cleaned, to have to "give it a good thrashing" & also for the black smoke to come flying out the exaust? Its just that I haven't seen anyone else mention this bit on other EGR threads?

Cheers Darren

Re: Cleaning egr valve

Going to have a go at the valve on my 1.3 multijet soon, from what I can see the valve is at the top RHS of the engine, looks like I'll need to remove the battery and it's cradle to get at it.

Anyone done the egr on a 1.3? it's looks like a right fiddle to do..

Re: Cleaning egr valve

Let us know how you get on.Went to tackle it last week but only took off the sensor and top part to check the pin was working.Looks like a bitch to get at.I have small hands and found it very difficult to get at.Hoping when it is done that it improves my sluggish 2nd and 3rd gear and increases fuel iffeciency.Havnt checked the maf or turbo yet so hope its just the egr.

I mention this regulary, on a weekly basis I go up a steep hill and thrash it, blow out the cobwebs and keeping the Egr clear.

It's a real pig although there is a little more room on a doblo than say the panda 1.3 version. I would personally renew it than clean it.

Re: Cleaning egr valve

I found the stilo guide useful, I cleaned my valve out twice but still got the fault light up for "exhaust gas flow recirculation low" or something to that effect. I traced this to an electrical fault on the solenoid coil as all other pipes were clean and valve moved free, this can be tested by connecting 12V to solenoid and check operation.
Fitted a new valve and all seems ok so far!
Thanks TD5 thanked for this post

Re: Cleaning egr valve

my doblo van 1.9 multijet started giving me egr problems and first thing i did was to buy a blanking plate, its now blanked off and no problems, engine runs better without it

just blank it off dont waste your money buying a new one or diesel thrashing the engine
Thanks rookie123 thanked for this post

some models will throw up error codes if you do that so an engine management tweak might be needed too.

A quick 20-30 second blast once as week isn't actually thrashing it though is it, doblo is so softly tuned you couldnt do any damage anyway.

Whether you fit a new EGR or blank it off should really be a moral issue not a financial one.

Re: Cleaning egr valve

to be honest the egr valves are always a problem and do need replacing cleaning only works a few times.

local garage seems to be replacing more and more on all the vehicles with 1.9 multijet
