Hi have a doblo it cut out on me about a week ago and wont start when u turn the key the starter just clicks and dash goes blank i tryed new battery and no joy so took starter out and got tested by auto electriction and its fine checked all earth straps and they are all ok any one any ideas thanks......

Hi Ken, Welcome to the FF.

If the battery, starter motor and wiring are all OK and the starter motor still just clicks, only thing left is seized engine. Possibly cam belt gone causing it as the car cut out on you.

Thanks for reply I only got cam belt done about 1000 miles ago so it's not that. And the engine hasn't seized I put a clutch in about 6 months ago and same thing happened it cut out and wouldn't start it was clicking the same way . Then is just started one day it's gone the same again but just won't turn over this time

The starter was taken out and tested on a bench and earth straps where tested with a multimeter

If everything you've tested is OK then there's no reason why the statrer motor shouldn't work in the car if it works on the bench.

One of the tests must have given a false result or not been carried out correctly.

How was the engine earth lead voltage drop test carried out if the starter motor wasn't working?

this might be a long shot, but try disconnecting the aux belt, my 1,9 jtd did exactly the same thing, it turned out to be the alternator bearing, it had collapsed and the battery couldnt turn the engine over, i thought my cambelt had snapped , also a few weeks before it happend my engine started cutting out for no reason, that was obviously the start of the problem, but didnt realize it. regards, geoff

It could be a problem with the insulation in the windings of the SM breaking down when hot/warm. I had the same fault a few years ago, car started fine when cold but after a run it was as if the battery was on its way out.
but everything checked out OK.
Of course, it was difficult to remove the SM when it was hot so it was always tested cold.
It was only when the insulation finally went that the problem was properly diagnosed.
When you turn the key, the clicking indicates the solenoid is working but the fact that the engine isn't spinning indicates a dodgy starter.

I found the problem today tryed to turn engine over by hand wuth rachet on crankshaft it was turnin so far then stoppin so i decided to see wat it was stoppin stripped down to check belts to see wat was stoppin it coulding see anything so stripper rocker cover off and there it was one off the vavles was stuck to the camshaft stoppin the engine from turnin but i dont no wat caused it cause all the other vavles are perfect so im hoping the problem doesnt go deeper anyone any suggestions why this would happen

well the only thing i can think of is the cambelt has slipped a few teeth, i know you had it changed but did they also swap the tensioners? when you say the valve is stuck to the cam, do you mean the as the tip of the cam comes into contact with the top of the valve (or cam follower) it refuses to open, ( push down) are the rest of the valves opening and closing as you rotate the engine? as you rotate the engine does it suddenly jam and that valve wont push down? regards. geoff.

The valve is stuck up and as the cam turns it hits the cam follower and the crank wont turn anymore the sleve that the valve seats in cracked and came out whice caused the valve to come up to far and get stuck strange dont no why this happened

i would get the valve timing checked to see if it has moved because if the valve wont move it could be a bent valve stem , or it is coming into contact with the top of the piston .regards ,geoff.
