Not looked in the manual Dave but have you tried Pirelli, Goodyear, Michelin etc. websites for their tyre selector recommendations. If they list winter/snow tyres at a given size then you have an answer. If they list something then IMHO they are legally responsible for that listing and if it is wrong you have legal comeback.

my 2005 multijet 16v prestigio has 225/45-18 which is correct and standard fitment.

looks like who ever had my car before was out to save a bit of money, seems mid range summer tyres are around £40 more each for the right size compared with the size mine has fitted

Take care dave – we’re somewhat backed-into-a-corner with Croma 225/45ZR18 … they need to be XL95Y or XL95W, so not many suitable options.

What are your 235/40R18?

Mine had the right size when I bought it, but a lower load rating. Putting the right ones on transformed the handling - I could suddenly go round corners.

You should find it handles much better with the proper ones fitted. You'll also have a few mm of extra cushioning too. Sounds like you got a bargain there.

looks like i am out of trouble for a little while found a set of 5 falken 225/45/18 95Y hardly used from a mate for 100 quid. they will do until i find some winter wheels at least

Actually resolves two elements. Brings you back within spec re tyre & rims. 235/40R18 tyres aren’t compatible with 7.5Jx18 rims.

.

didnt turn out as good as i hoped, on closer inspection 1 tyre had a cut in the wall, another was broke inside on the rim seal maybe done when we was getting it off, and the one in the boot wasn't same make it was a michelin pilot, brand new but didn't have no speed rating on it
so ended up just getting the best matching pair to fit temporally as its better than running around on the space saver, £40 for the 2 fitted
