where is it set?

Suprised myself today getting away from a junction that the needle went some way past 5,000rpm... there is a rev limiter on the 150 multijet isn't there?!

Oh, and the lack of 'redline' is annoying.

You don't say. It was a general question Stu. Could have borrowed it / courtesy car etc.

There is a rev limiter buy way of fuel starvation. Kicks in at 5K or there abouts. I guess if you have a following tail wind or down hill slope then >5K could be expected.

From what I've read for other Fiat models, it sounds to me like the rev "limiter" just logs that you've over-revved it so they can tell you to sod off if you have any engine or gearbox problems under warranty.

Settling in to Croma ownership...the cynicism has started

Well I think you are well out of order on this. Current MOT diesel engine fume tests require reving of the engine till the limiter kicks in.

Since when did hitting any designed limiter automatically sign you up to the "no longer supported" membership club.

No, thats an 'over-rev limit' recorder.

Eg when shifting into a really low gear at speed.

The rev limiter is different.

I was half-joking.

If the limiter only works by cutting the fuel, after the revs have reached a limit, isn't it possible to exceed the limit without banging it down a gear or three?

E.g. going downhill, powerful engine, all of the obese family on board, plus a bootload of chips and pies, foot flat to the floor.

Isn't it possible that the revs could exceed the limit, especially if there's loads of juice flowing when it is cut off? A decent engine could probably gain around 1000rpm in a second.

Have a search on here. I've read tales of this happening to people.

I'm me, not Fiat!

Well there are two issues here.

1) originasl post implied hitting the rev limiter invalidated and warranty / repair support. This has since been clarified.

2) ANY engine which does not have an "automatic clutch/drive disengage" can be over reved by changing down incorrectly.

Most modern auto and selespeed boxes will not allow one to overrev the engine.
