Re: 16V Turbo or 20V Turbo Diesel???

Plans, we all make them, some of us break them but we all tend to try. This Summer I was looking to spend my last Tax rebate (they'v sorted my code now so I'll have to save myself like a proper grown up) on a car I could take to job interviews without feeling silly. Bravo t-jet was top of that list until I bought a Punto GT and Alfa Spider. :hehe:

So I have a new plan. Restoring the Coupe as a classic is less of a viable option due to being clocked but I have always had a soft spot for the Coupe and the 16V Turbo is in my opinion the best of the bunch. So why not keep the bloody thing for myself, make sure everything is done to my standards and fix the tachometer?

Good plan and just in time to be a Winter project.

So on the forth warmest day of the year I finally did the second part of the first job. The long removed pleb spec' spoiler holes are now welded, skim of filler and the whole boot lid in grey primer.

So it begins.

Again.

There's another 16V Turbo Coupe on eBay but I'm thinking of dropping my clocker in my Bravo again.

Re: 16V Turbo or 20V Turbo Diesel???

So the Spider sale fell through and I went to my Fiat dealership to test drive the new 124 Spider. Didn't fit felt gutted but my rear wheel drive itch wouldn't go away. Sold my Alfa Spider and bought an RX8

In the meantime. I have finally bought the exhaust turbo to cat' down pipe, fitted a new battery and moved my Coupe to where the Alfa was spending Winter.

As soon as the exhaust sounds bearable I'll be able to move the old girl about and the real work can begin.

16V Turbo Project

I have my Fiat Coupe up on ramps to WD-40 the nuts and bolts to fit the new down pipe but it looks to be fine.

I can't feel it leaking and there are signs it isn't as old as I expected.

However none of the gaskets have ever been replaced including the manifold gasket where a crack has been previously welded.

I might just need a new exhaust to turbo, turbo to cat' gasket set or the manifold may be cracked again.

The oil leak I thought was due to the chav'd cam' cover and gasket not being replaced could be due to the filler around the hot oil feed to the sump from the turbo. Another bodge as the sump has no gasket either and what feels like tile silicone adhesive.

So as I have the old girl on ramps I may as well drain the sump, take it off, get it blasted, welded (to replace the filler) if possible or replaced with a new gasket. Take the manifold off, check for cracks repair or replace all with new gaskets, nuts and bolts.

I'm beginning to question if it's worth it again.

Still this...

...has been on my watch list a while now.

Re: 16V Turbo or 20V Turbo Diesel???

Threaded pipe ends welded to the flange on the cat' and the bolts are so rusted they rounded off. The whole exhaust has to come off so I can remove the cat' and down pipe together, grind out the bolts and refit the whole system. :hehe:

I would have thought replacement sump pans would be available considering the lineage of the engine. No luck finding one yet.

There is a N/A one and I could weld the hot oil pipe spout to it I guess.

Re: 16V Turbo or 20V Turbo Diesel???

The leaking sump was the last straw.

I would have loved the car but while I was under there looking at one job I notice all the others and...

https://www.fiatforum.com/punto/4473...o-project.html

...instead of taking the engine out and dropping it in my Bravo (that has a perfectly good engine) I thought I would let my Fiat/Alfa/Lancia restoration specialist contact (I sold my Strada Abarth wheels to and have been in Facebook contact since) and take on Punto GT with the 16V Turbo already fitted-ish.

My Italian friends couldn't get an original 16V Turbo sump so I would have had to bought the N/A one and welded a hot oil pipe to it.

The GT comes in with a 500 value so if the PPC 999 Challenge comes back this year as planned I'll have 499 to go, one of the best front wheel drive platforms ever made, one of the best engines ever made in one of the best colours the Punto GT ever came in. I like my chances this time.

Re: 16V Turbo or 20V Turbo Diesel???

That's a shame! Are you going to replace it with some more Fiats?
