Quick question here regarding PCI cards.

My computer has three spare PCI connectors, and each PCI connector has two slots. One long and one short.

However, looking for a PCI graphics card on Ebay most seem to have three connectors - one long connector in the middle and two short at each end.

What's the difference? And can the three connector PCI cards be used in the 2 slot connectors on the motherboard?

I did a Google search and couldn't find much out about it I'm afraid :(

Dave - I'm running Windows 2000 Professional SP4.

Stuart - no, it doesn't have an AGP slot :bang: The link to my motherboard specs shows one, but mine doesn't have it - I can see where it's supposed be but my model came without it. All I have is three white PCI slots.

4RL - See pictures for what I mean about 2 slot and 3 slot PCI connectors. Are 3 slot PCI Express cards? If not, what are they and can they work with my computer?

Damn old PC's!

1st gfx card I think is AGP.
2nd is PCI.

this might help
PCI-e
PCI
AGP

PCI-e has 2 slots as does PCI. Although they are physically incompatable. If the card says PCI, it probably is.

No, PCI-e won't work with your computer. Nor mine for that matter :)

I put a PCI card with 3 connector in my new PC today. It went into the 2 slot. I did wonder if I had got it right but I am typing this message so something must be right

That's the problem 4RL. According to the search criteria on Ebay it's supposed to be a PCI card not an AGP card! I specified PCI in my search and NOT PCI-E or AGP/ ISA etc.

And the picture below is a PCI-X card with even more connectors on it

Gaz, what card did you install in your PC and does it actually work?!!!!

buy a new pc you tight git:p :p

If you'd like to contribute to my student bursary then I will! Just trying to update this PC to last me until I can save enough bursary to buy a newer PC.

Gaz's network card is working fine (cheers for the info Gaz (y) ) so I keep my fingers crossed that the three slot Soundblaster Audigy card winging its way to me will also work on my PCI 2 slot connector...

Actually Gaz, can you take a picture of your card installed in your PC and post it up? I'm just a bit paranoid that the one I bought won't fit :spin:

I will in the morning, but to save you going insane a google pic

You can just make out the 3 connections. The card fits into a standard PCI slot.

Cheers Gaz, I had a look and yes, that's a three slot PCI card. That's kind of what I was trying to find out, whether they would fit the two slot connectors on my mobo. (y) I bought a sound card off Ebay and it has the three slot PCI on it and I didn't know if it would fit the PCI connectors on my mother board but it looks like it will. I take it that one of the small connectors on the card is not used as such?

i found an ols ISA one or a pci one dunno what it is says VL 88S chip on it say S3 VIRGE/DX onboard, you can have it foc on thursday if you like

Cheers Dave :worship: I only have PCI connectors so if it's an ISA then it won't fit. But bring it down on Thursday anyway and I'll buy you a hot chocolate (y)

you do have ISA unlees i got name wrong, its that black one at the end, but i will bring the pci one :) remind me wednesday night

Dave, you're a star :worship:

Just for the record, the link to my mobo specs and the picture of it do indeed show it having an ISA connector at the bottom. My mobo has everything except this connector! You can see where it's supposed to be on the circuit board (the markings are there for it on the pcb), but it definitely does not have one fitted for some reason. See picture attached, where you can see the space for the non fitted ISA connector underneath the three PCI connectors.

It has three PCI slots and one mini slot thing with a modem connected to it (not used as I'm on broadband via USB). Therefore I can only fit PCI cards to my machine.

I must remind you to remind me to remind you on Wednesday night to bring the PCI version to the ACE Cafe!
